Testing wireless network

wlan0     No scan results

from iwlist wlan0 scanning

Set up rc.conf as follows

lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
eth0="dhcp"
wlan0="dhcp"
WLAN_INTERFACES=(wlan0)
INTERFACES=(lo eth0 wlan0)

Just wondering if I have set up rc.conf up correctly.....?

Re: Testing wireless network

As far as I know wireless device has to be setup in /etc/conf.d/wireless. There You can add option for your wi-fi connection (essid, key, ap address).Also check if modules for your wifi are loaded at boot.

Re: Testing wireless network

Mr Green - forget all about WLAN_INTERFACES and conf.d/wireless - that is so old it creaks.  Take a look at /etc/network-profiles and make a new one for your wireless device - all will be come very clear!

Re: Testing wireless network

I think you have to do a
ifconfig wlan0 up
before the scanning works with
iwlist wlan0 scanning

Cheers,
Blind

Re: Testing wireless network

Mmmh - I always got that last message when I forgot to turn the device on (but since it works in the virtualbox....) or something was wrong with the module or firmware. Try reloading the module?

Re: Testing wireless network

figuring that .... r8169 does not load everything the crypt stuff for example XP [shivers] picks up r8187 right off

no goggling show that error message is not a real problem the fact that scanning does not work points to the modules either not loading or are wrong

thanks for your help kinda in the dark when it comes to wireless....

/me where did I put that wireless router !

Re: Testing wireless network

You may not be able to scan with your device in Linux at all.  The drivers may not support it even if you can scan in Windows.  Not saying that is the case but it is something to be aware of.

Re: Testing wireless network

If you miss the ease of Windows and (K)Ubuntu, why don't you use (K)NetworkManager? No X?

Re: Testing wireless network

Well tested wireless network under virtualbox [windows_xp guest!] run ubuntu on my laptop as its not connected to the web [atm!] but ubuntu does not like running ad-hoc which is the way I was going to go to connect laptop to media-device...

The only other way is to give a static address to both....

The Archos 604wifi is Linux based running Opera web browser [could get Arch running on it lol!]

So state of play I can get Desktop to see my wireless router [Arch!] but it does not pick up media device..... [yet!]

Media device again works fine with wireless router no problem

What I want... is to get Desktop talking to media device sort of media server if you like... theres a thought

Ahh well will keep trying odd that I am the only Arch user that uses wireless lol

Re: Testing wireless network

You surely are not the only Arch user using wireless. But I cannot make sense of _anything_ you are writing. What is "Desktop"? How does it "see your wireless router" and why is the router "[Arch!]"? What does "Desktop talking to media device sort of media server if you like" mean? What is "media device" anyway? Do you mean 'router'? Is it yours? How is it set up? WEP, WPA, Mac filtering, ...?

Maybe it is my own English (I am not native) that is obstructing. But I think part of the problem is that you never stated what the situation actually is and where you would like to go from there. Noone can help effectively if certain basics are not clear.

Do you really want to use network-profiles? Or would you rather like to use a program like NetworkManager that provides an applet by means of which you control which network to use?

Re: Testing wireless network

Do not worry I will figure it out myself, Its hard to explain what I want to do....

Desktop = my main pc

Basically I want my pc to find my media device [which is wifi capable!] so I can share my music files with it

network-manager is not what I was looking for tried it....

Of course I am not the only Arch user who uses wireless that was meant as a joke ....
