Network Manager

I had problems loading the internet through rc.conf with wpa supplicant where my interner would go off so I blanked out the settings of my WPA supplicant conf file and used networkmanager instead. I don't know if this uses wpa supplicant as well, all I know is it can connect me to the internet and load the WPA without messing around with scripts. This is all well and good but the internet doesn't load until X loads and knetworkmanager starts so say I just want to log straight in to the console my internet isn't configured yet. Also I get error messages at startup of X from any program that requires internet like Kopete because it loads before knetworkmanager has a chance to establish an internet connection.  All the examples I can find of how to setup internet at boot time don't seem to be for WPA or require the use of wpa supplicant. Is there a way of configuring my internet for wpa so that I don't have to use knetworkmanager besides using wpa_supplicant?
