I installed squid yesterday, and I've found while browsing that sometimes squid will randomly fail to resolve a dns which is fine.
After refreshing the dns will usually resolve.
An example of the error message:
The requested URL could not be retrieved
While trying to retrieve the URL: http://bbs.archlinux.org/
The following error was encountered:
Unable to determine IP address from host name for bbs.archlinux.org
The dnsserver returned:
No DNS records
This means that:
The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
Your cache administrator is webmaster.
Some domains which I have received errors for, but after (sometimes multiple) refreshes resolved are:
bbs.archlinux.org www.linuxjunkies.org www.swelltech.com
Those are just a few.
I've just done basic squid configuration, nothing to do with timeout or anything. I've attached my squid.conf.
My resolv.conf just has the router (which gets the dnses from my isp) as my nameserver.
Any ideas on how this could be fixed?

It might be that your router is the one failing to return dns...
You might try installing dnsmasq on that machine, and then changing the resolv.conf to point to the loopback. I have done that on one of my servers, and the dns caching alone has been useful....

I thought squid cached dns requests?
Anyway, I'll try pointing my resolv.conf to the dns servers directly and see what happens.

it should indeed be caching dns. Just not sure how long.
You might try setting squid to log access, and tailing the access and error logs to see what kind of traffic you are seeing....that is..if this issue is consistent and reproducable.

Well, upon removing the router's dns caching from the equation, the problem seems to have disappeared.
Wonder if it's a bug in squid.

If it was a bug in squid, I would expect that it would have behaved the same.
Maybe your router is flakey for dns requests...or maybe it takes a while to return a response...and squid has a shorter timeout or something.
dunno.
Glad you are functional again though.

Kindly mark this as solved .

Although Cactus is still around The OP is not. I think this six year old thread may have predated that practice
I will mark this as solved and will close it.
