ftp music

Hi, I have an older latop (running 98se) and my main computer (running arch of course) that I want to ftp. I was wondering if it was possible to play music thats in the desktop computer on the laptop through the ethernet without storing anything on the laptop since it doesn't have much hdd space. If this is possile then how? Thank you.

Re: ftp music

Another option - share the desktop's drive using NFS, mount it on the laptop, then use any player you want.

Re: ftp music

Ok mpd looked too confusing and seemed like it didnt have too much support for windows. I tried NFS but i can't seem to get it to work. I cant seem to get it to start all the way up. When i run rpcinfo quota it just shows me uses for rpcinfo.

[patrick@myhost ~]# rpcinfo quota
Usage: rpcinfo [ -n portnum ] -u host prognum [ versnum ]
       rpcinfo [ -n portnum ] -t host prognum [ versnum ]
       rpcinfo -p [ host ]
       rpcinfo -b prognum versnum
       rpcinfo -d prognum versnum

Also is nfs built into the arch kernel by defualt? I don't know cause I'm still sort of new to linux. Please help. Thanks

Re: ftp music

Ahh.. sorry. I completely missed the fact that the laptop is running windows. hmm

Forget NFS - set up Samba on your desktop, mount it on the laptop, etc

Re: ftp music

MPD is not confusing. I've set up several MPD+IceCast+phpMp2 jukeboxes - just read comments in config files. The idea is to launch icecast, configured to accept stream from mpd, then run mpd with output set to icecast (afaik you can output to both soundcard and icecast simultaneously). phpMp is optional - you can manage mpd by sshing (putty!) to jukebox computer and running ncmpc.
