phpgd does not appear to be in the repository, and I can't find information about installing it in the wiki. Google tells me the million easy ways to do it - from repositories. Can anyone tell me how to install it? I can't even find it.

According to a few things I read, php comes natively with GD support - but it's not being displayed with a phpinfo. What gives?

Afair php comes with GD support.
Make sure the following line is commented out in your /etc/php.ini:

extension=gd.so
