Forum search yielded somebody advising ttf-bitstream-vera, so I installed that and restarted X, but the problem persists.
Any ideas?

AFAIK bitstream-vera lacks a few unicode fonts. I use DejaVu - it is a clone of bitstream-vera with full unicode support. And it's somewhere in the repos. Don't forget to change the default fonts in your browser ![]()

For sure it's an encoding problem.
"locale" will tell you what encoding you are using

DejaVu didn't fix it.
