Hi,
First, excuse me for my bad english.
Since upgrade to kernel 2.6.20 and upgrade from zd1211-r83-3 to zd1211-r83-5, my usb dongle wifi is not able to be associated to my wifi box.
Udev load the module without problems, I really don't know from where it can come.
iwconfig seems good.
Here is what it gives me when i try to start network
note : i already had the 'down: error fetching interface information: Device not found' before upgrading but the network was working
/etc/rc.d/network restart
:: Shutting down interface: wlan0 [DONE]
:: Stopping Network [BUSY]
down: error fetching interface information: Device not found
[FAIL]
:: Starting network profile: wifi-lander [DONE]
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:400 (400.0 b) TX bytes:400 (400.0 b)
:: Starting Network [DONE]
After that, it looks as if "network restart" has working. Actually, i still have no network and ifconfig only shows me 'lo'.
Does somenone knows issue about this problem or has the same problem since upgrade?
For the moment i keep kernel 2.6.19 and zd1211-rw-3 until i find a solution...
PS : the hardware I use is a Sagem XG-760A USB

I have the same problem. After a Pacman upgrade that gave me a 2.6.20 kernel my zd1211 based usb wireless lan stick failed to conect. I did a bit of digging and found this bug report in the arch bug list.
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6438
My own system's kernel.log has most of the entries in this report, including the wlan0 is not ready error but doesn't then include the dhcp timeout message. I don't know why.
"iwconfig" shows the wlan0 interface not associated with the AP
How do I undo a pacman update ;-(

Check on the bug 6438 for what I managed to get to work. You should not need the zd1211 package anymore if you use the zd1211rw driver, but you will need the firmware.
