Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

Here's a little article I noticed that might get people screaming for blood

http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.c … -sudo.html

In how far does this affect Linux?

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

It ins't sudo! It's something like MAC in FreeBSD/MacOS X or SELinux.

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO885 … k/mac.html
http://www.sedarwin.org/
http://www.nsa.gov/selinux/

So in fact it's more than a mere sudo, it's the technology behind such an "interface".

Use UNIX or die.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

This patent isn't even related to sudo. This requires an administrative process to be running at all times while sudo does not.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

Rather related to keyring software used by gnome / kde than to sudo. They run a process (keyring-manager) to archive this tasks.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

Read the patent under claims and compare it to SELinux and so on or the explanation of UAC,

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

Read the patent. It's a different structure and process described than sudo uses. So for sudo, there's actually no serious danger. I rather see danger for gnome-keyring and the kdesu implementation, since they need "services" or "servers" running in the background.
Anyway, i don't see any real problem within this, a new architecture will be found if it's really serious. I think the gnome developers will know about this patent and also know if it describes their architecture used.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

I don't see any danger with kdesu and such simply because of the magical thing called "prior art".

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

gnome-keyring does not run with administrator privileges anyway.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

The funny thing is that it is apparently a copied feature from the Linux desktop.

But Linux devs do not patent their inventions.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

Sudo hasn't anything to do with Linux, the idea is from the early 80s at BSD on VAX machines. The first sudo is from AT&T in 1983.

Re: Did Microsoft just patent sudo?

Ah, thanks for the information. This way it's even more ridiculous to patent it in 2007.

It's ridiculous to patent software, anyway.
