I just discovered that I have about a million (7567 to be precise) samba log files with ridiculous names like:
log.nmbd.old.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.3.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1
some shorter, some longer. Most of them are empty.
1. My gut feeling tells me that there is something wrong here, with my Samba configuration. Is it?
2. Is there any reason not to delete them (except the most recent ones)?

I noticed that on some of my servers recently too. I just deleted them all. I haven't seen any side effects.
I did notice that there is a setting smb.conf called 'max log size'. I think that might stop it from creating hundreds of log files if you up it to a larger amount.
The other way to fix it is to make the log file non specific by changing
log file = /var/log/samba.log.%m
to
log file = /var/log/samba.log
