Re: Laptops which run Arch

I've got a IBM Thinkpad T40 that's just about to turn 4 and runs Arch just fine.

I have an Inspiron 1150, I think it's the 1100 but Europeanized or so. I believe most things work:

- I haven't tried the modem (it's disabled in BIOS anyway)
- I haven't set up any power saving stuff (yet)

3D works, but the framebuffer must be deactivated or you get some V_BIOS error in X.

Running: Arch Linux i686, x86_64, ppc

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP Compaq nx5000 - no problem whatsoever. Only thing I don't like about it, is that the "delete" button is placed way up in the wilderness instead of where I want it: right next to the arrow keys (where there's a second ctrl key which I never use). Can't blame Arch for that one though, so the answer is: nx5000 + Arch =  TRUE!

Fujitsu Lifebook S6210. I love my Windows key! All my xfce shortcuts are tied to it.

Everything works except the SD card reader.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Hi everybody,

this post is a bit outdated but i thought i try to contribute.

At page 2 or 3 i can read that the Inspiron 8600 runs flawlessly. Sadly i cannot support that statement.

Arch Linux runs quite nicely but it has its glitches for me. I have a DELL Inspiron 8600, 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600 mobility.

The graphics card works nice with the radeon driver. Suspend does not run at all even after using the Suspend2 tutorial from the wiki - that is a really sad point for me.

Battery lifetime is okay (~2h) after installing laptop-mode-tools and cpufreq. Anyways i get 3 hours with windows but there might be some stuff i can improve.

Altogether i love my Arch Linux system and will try to remove the glitches. The quick boot time and the new software makes me quite happy and i will stay with this system.

Greetings
André

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Thinkpad T42... bought via a internet auction ebayish place.

The salesman said the screen would be 14" 1400x1050 but it was only 1024x768... But he was honest and just didn't know it so I got some money back. In the end I got an almost perfect laptop with little money. smile

Everything works great, suspend to ram and disk too.

Centrino stuff so the wifi-chip is intel, works great. GPU is the worst part in thinkpads... this one has a radeon 7500 mobile with some 64 ram... worse than an older thinkpad my dad has . hmm This runs compiz but playing anything with the radeon driver is impossible, and fglrx doesn't support this anymore.

The only bad thing is battery consumption when suspended, it could be smaller. Now it eats easily at least 30% battery during just one night... compared to my old ibook which with mac os X could easily sleep for 24 hours and still have.. a lot of the battery left.

The best thing about this machine is the keyboard and touchpad... never used anything more comfortable. smile And all the fn-something combos and the volume keys work out-of box... the volume keys affect the soundcard directly so it's nice as they work always. Being able to mute the machine fast can sometimes be helpful. smile

Asus G1

Everything works except OLED display (right now it is a proprietary USB device with no open source driver/program).

Re: Laptops which run Arch

PROPOSAL:

Everyone posting info here please update and extend Laptops category on wiki. wink

Also, additional summary page could be created with just laptops list and "works / microphone doesn't work / need to load module1 & module2" info + the last tested kernel.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

My Acer Aspire 5100-3949 runs fine with the exception of the video card and getting AIGLX or XGL working.. I just don't wanna make a wiki article because there is no set template. Consider making it a little easier to post info on the wiki.

I agree - a template would be nice smile. That way you can see what info is to be expected from people posting new entries.

Running Compaq Presario V3288AU (based on V 3000) AMD Turion 64 GeForce Go 6150 1GB RAM- Arch 64- cool smooth install- only problem is wifi setup. Have not spent much time on it. Will do it over the next weekend.

Runs smoothly.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

0.8 Works fine on a Dell Inspiron 6400 smile

Core Duo T2500
2G Ram
Wireless intel 1395
ATI X1400 Graphics (had to patch ATI Driver for this kernel though)
Bluetooth
USB Disks

I've tried loads of other distro's inc Fedora, Ubunto, Slackware, Debian etc but ArchLinux is the simplest to get working thanks to the Forum's, Wiki, pacman and that it's based on the latest software.

Thinkpad R40

i had slackware on here for a couple of years, needed to upgrade, but kept putting it off because of all the configuration, wifi, compiling, gnome b.s., etc. i would have had to do. decided to throw arch on instead to test it out, worked beautifully -- even better than expected. everything works with minimal hassle, and without 10gigs of useless software installed. i love this distro. big_smile

Almost every hardware components work(graphic, sound, usb, pcmcia, ...) under Arch except that I never tried and tested the modem on it.
