Forget debian stable/ testing. SID is where its at. I'm very impressed with arch so far tho.

My experience with lot of years in using Debian, you can break a testing Debian easier than any ArchLinux. Try SID and burn your machine.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I had Suse, Debian, Gentoo and Kubuntu 6.10 before, but Arch is the first time I don't think of changing at all! I really liked Gentoo, but all the compiling was very annoying. After Gentoo I tried Kubuntu and liked it, but is was to slow for me. With Arch I found Gentoo without the need of compiling! big_smile

unless something drastic changes with the way arch is put together, i wont be changing distro.  arch has everything i need and nothing i dont want - speedy, bloat-free, easy to customise without having to read a several hundred page "handbook", friendly-active community and up to date packages.

Arch until death, or until I make my own. Whichever comes first.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

Well... I feel well with Arch, and I'm not planning to change soon.
Though, I know one day the will to change will be stronger than anything and then.
I may then try a LFS system or something like SourceMage/Lunar.
Or I may go back to Zenwalk which was one of the best experience with Linux.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I've always wanted to try Gentoo (for more than just a couple of days) but i just lose patience. I don't really think there is another distro to change Arch (and one is not really needed, actually). Changing a working distro is a kind of premature optimization.

If everything else fails, read the manual.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I don't see myself leaving arch any time soon.  It's just to good.

Source based distros attract my attention, and if one worth using emerges you can bet I'll have it on a partition somewhere.  Gentoo lost its way a long time ago.  I've been playing with SourceMage and enjoy it so far, but with all the compiling I haven't had time yet to get to tinkering.  Feels better then Gentoo anyway, and I was booted into my system in under 30 minutes (Before the re-compile.)  I suppose my true wish is source-based arch.  I've tried a few times with srcpac to build a totally self-compiling arch but have always fell short of the mark.  Maybe someday I'll get it figured out and write a wiki page.  I realize it may not be the most efficient way to build a system from source, but I'm so comfortable with arch that I would really like to keep the flavor but with the option to build it from the ground up.  I guess after all the work I had to do to maintain the system with other distros arch is making me bored! tongue

I've never tried a BSD, but I assume it wouldn't be so different from a Linux to warrant switching.  The curiosity gets to me sometimes tho.

I'm going to change debian to CRUX on my home serwer. But on desktop, still arch. I'm just too lazy for something else...

Hehe, if portage can make a decent source distro emerge then I'm all for it.  Unfortunately, after following Gentoo for years, I have little faith.

I have a horrible confession to make... I've been using the Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn Beta for the past few weeks. It was supposed to be just a quick install to see what it was like before I installed Arch on my laptop, but it worked so well I just didn't bother to go with Arch.

I also had a look at unbuntu distros sometime ago, the Kubuntu, and liked when everything worked and the hardwares auto configured. In my PC with Arch, sound never worked and wireless troublesome But my new Dell Inspiron 9400 with Ati WUXGA (1920x1200), doesn't like Ubuntu but loves Arch Linux. I was not expecting this, just the right match. Arch will be there forever.... as long as Dell as is manufactured. smile Moreover, I don't want to change Arch.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I left Arch not long ago for Ubuntu, but in Ubuntu your system is just plain slow. It really has nothing over Debian except for a few configuration apps, and anyone who's used Arch really doesn't need these. In any case, I then removed Ubuntu and added openSuSE, and it's by far the most wonderful, attractive, usable Linux distribution I've had the pleasure of using.

Boot is a little slower, but performance is average (by no means is it slow). OOo boots in a couple seconds, like it does everywhere else for me, but I really see the difference when configuring my system or working in general. There are so many little tweaks to KDE that aid productivity that I'm easily recovering any incremental time lost by not being as fast as Arch or Debian. And YaST is a dream for managing the system, whether for adding and removing users, configuring GRUB, or anything else you may need to do. And package management isn't as bad as people say.

The only downside is that I don't have as much selection as I did in Debian (about on par with Arch, though), and YaST software management takes 1-2 minutes to boot. Since I've gotten my system "just right" though, I really don't use it often, so this issue is exaggerated.

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

My next distro? I have no idea yet. I keep trying different distros, but the only ones I do any real work in is Arch and Kubuntu.
My biggest hobby is to try the different distros, and how they install.
Lately I've looked into a Brazilian distro called famelix. I haven't been able to download it yet though, as all the mirrors are situated on the other side of the planet from me... wink

I need no other distro than ArchLinux. It's enough for me. Actually it surpasses my needs, so why bother to change?

What Distro!
I'm hopelessly addicted to arch: pacman, the closeness to the metal, and the maintainability are top notch.

but i would try slack or crux.

Arch by far is the best, flexible and highly configurable Linux for me. For the other heavyweight related to work, I switch to the other OS on my laptop, Solaris 10. Anything else is uncivilized. wink

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I'll give Gusty Gibbon a go when it is released to see what it is like. Or Zenwalk in the future.

I got broken in by Breezy back in Dec 05, previously I had tinkered with some Linux distros but be it non-supported drivers for modems (back in 2003-04) and no real passion to re-learn my computering experience after having grown up on Windows -- until XP got too bogged down.
I used Ubuntu up until a few days ago and moved because it was playing up with my ethernet router without resolve ( it was constantly dropping connection). I managed to make a frustrated download of Fedora happen, but didn't like it. Thankfully I found that I had an iso of Arch that I had downloaded a couple of months back. Having a need to change finally gave me that incentive to install it.

What am I rambling about? So long as I am contented then I'm not really thinking that far ahead to the future. I have no desire to go back to Windows or to get a Mac (on the contrary) but if something breaks that I can't figure out how to fix then I would entertain the thought.
Or if I got a new computer. (Then I would go for a more hands on experience distro probably Gentoo or Slackware.)

I haven't found an OS that is superior to Arch, i can not see a change any time soon. I'm SOLD! ;D

Re: Which will be your next distro after Arch Linux?

I upgrade my main computer earlier this year and since I was going to be installing arch on a new harddrive anyway, I thought I'd give Ubuntu a try since I've heard such great things about it.  Install went fine, but then it hung on reboot (had to add a boot parameter to make it work), x-windows didn't load until tweaking the config file... then there was no sound... at this point I just got tired and said "screw it, lets install arch again".  Arch has mostly always "just worked" for me... if I had problems, the forums had the answer to clear things up quickly.
