Re: Must Have Packages

Aaah, omg-optimized Firefox. I find it quite silly to make up a new name for an optimized build of an application.

How fast does it run for you? I doubt this compiler flags make any difference. Firefox is very bloated and we will have to wait a few years (I say 100 or more) until compilers are good enough to make a difference to Firefox <= 1.5.

Re: Must Have Packages

I don't use it now, it makes so little difference... I noticed it was a bit faster starting up, but that's about it.

Re: Must Have Packages

in no particular order,

along with the well-known :

- (kde) - DE
- mplayer - multimedia
- konqueror - web and file management
- kontact - mail, rss, adress book
- amarok - music
- amule - p2p
- openoffice - office
- k3b - cd/dvd burning
- kaffeine - video
- krusader - file management
- kpdf - pdf viewer
- cups - printing system
- kopete - chat client
- quanta+ - web editor
- tvtime - tv software
- frozen-bubble - kick-ass game to play with girlfriend
- konsole - even though i'm not much of a cli-addicted
- hibernate-script, powersave (in [unstable] ?) and kpowersave (in [community] ?) - this energy saving stuff should be in [extra]...

i thought i should mention a few good, less-known ones that deserve more advertising :
- katapult - keyboard program launcher
- komposé - exposé-like full-screen task manager
- kdm-theme - theme manager for kde
- gtk-qt-engine - applies kde themes to gtk apps
- qtcurve - versatile kde theme
- rlocate - always up-to-date version of slocate
- kio-locate - handy tool to use locate in kde
- evolution-mission emission-sources kernel (haven't tried tham on arch yet)
- realplayer - needed to play streaming ram files...
- klik - testdrive program, a la mac osx installation, unfortunately not supported by arch (used to work ok on my gentoo), but very very useful
- apache-php-mysql

apps that piss me off :
- firefox - slow web browser
- thunderbird - mail client that lacks many features
- compiz/xgl - 3d desktop stuff (works fine via kororaa livecd - very buggy when installed)
- wine - ms windows emulator that never achieved to run my windows apps
- kdetv - tv program that doesn't work properly at high resolution

stuff i need to experiment :
- esp-r - building energy simulation software

stuff i would badly need :
- a working and reasonably fast ms windows/pc emulator - would be awesome if it could use my current windows installation
- a usable docker, a la mac osx
- (a faster machine...)

sshd

In arch i use gnome if i first log into the something graphical simply cause i feel the default arch kde installation is extreamly bloated.

Re: Must Have Packages

screen - The program that brought me to UNIX back in the days when I used to use VAX/VMS.  Quite possibly the best program ever written.
ratpoison
firefox
rtorrent
nano
vi(m)
lzma
mplayer
links
cedega - the windows killer!  I can't wait until wine gets decent sound support, I'd drop cedega in a heartbeat if WoW didn't sound like crap without it.
pacman and makepkg - The package management is what keeps me with arch.  No other system even comes close.
