My hard drive bit the dust the other day, so I'm no trying to rebuild my computer with a new one. I got to the part of the install where I needed to install the base packages and found that my CD was corrupt - so I figured I'd give an ftp install a go...
Having had the foresight to include madwifi on my CD I was able to get the network up and running and got everything very neatly. I then rebooted and tried to install madwifi - from the very latest packages I could find ( which were newer than the ones used during install - as, obviously, is the kernel).
They installed without problems and I could load the ath_pci module. The problem is that whenever I try and get the network started I'm told:
ath0: unknown interfave: No Such device
My /etc/conf.d/wireless says:
wlan_ath0="atho mode managed essid <my_essid>"
WLAN_INTERFACES=(ath0)
and the relevant part of my rc.conf:
ath0="dhcp"
...
INTERFACES=(lo ath0)
I'm assuming that this may be due to some sort of incompatibility between my kernel version and the version of madwifi I have installed - but they're both the latest...
Am I doomed to wait until there's a new madwifi package - or is there something else that I'm missing...?

OK - I've discovered that if I omit the countrycode option from the module then it all works - but the docs suggest that this is required. Can anyone shed any light? Am I likely to run into any problems in the medium term..?

Since it was working before you updated it ... my wild guess would be that you didn't install the correct madwifi package.
There are 3 builds of madwifi available
1) madwifi - meant for kernel26
2) madwifi-ck - meant for kernel26ck
3) madwifi-suspend2 - meant for kernel26suspend2
What kernel26 and madwifi flavours do you have installed?

I've never used the countrycode option for madwifi and had no problems and I've been using my wifi card for a couple of years now. What docs suggest that it is required?
