Hi all
Been a while since i was on here, anyway i just done a fresh install on Arch Duke all is well setting it all up but my pc hardlocks at random and i have to hard reset the PC, all new hardware has been running windows for gaming for a long time with out one lockup.
Specs are:
AM2 x2 4000
2 gig ddr 800
Gigabyte MOtherboard Nforce 550
Asus 7900 GS
couple of HDD
I was thinking maybe it has something to do with acpi?
How do i disable acpi at boot to see if it helps?
ANy ideas?

My system also hardlocks every once in a while without any info in everything.log.

With mine it now seems to be ok since i stopped using beryl?
Offline
Ndiswrapper, being a kernel module, can cause kernel lockups. I recommend the latest version: 1.45_rc3
Offline
thanks but it was beryl doing it, run gnome with beryl for about 20 minutes and it locked, without beryl for around 2 hours and hasnt locked once.
Offline
Nope just done it again for no reason? Just browsing the web with firefox, i am using Arch64??
nothing in Logs either
Offline
Now this is starting to piss me off, random locks for no reason about every 15 - 20 minutes, nothing in logs just freezes up while web browsing.
maybe its the 64 bit version as i never had this with 32 bit version of arch?
Offline
just got this
This time it locked but i could Alt+Ctrl +Backspace out

No idea what it was but now im on 32bit Arch and all is well????
Im to impatient to wait for a fix

I'm not incredible or anything at deciphering X/kernel error messages, but maybe try uninstalling gnome-screensaver... If uninstalling Beryl worked for a while, then that kind of points to openGL as a culprit, and if you have a GL screensaver loaded then it might be doing the same thing. That and it says that gnome-screen saver is 'Tainted'... although I don't know what that means I'm guessing that's not good
Offline
Tryed uninstalling all GLX stuff and it still happened
Tainted is because the nvidia drivers are not open source
Offline
Do the locks occur when using the CLI, or only when X is running? Because if they occur when X is running it's probably X freezing up as it is apt to do - you can SSH in and kill it, and I'm not sure but I think that verynice allows you to kill it automatically.

I had an issue with lockups recently and I have been lock free for a while since switching from the proprietary ATI driver to the open-source one. Is anyone that's having the issue using ATI drivers?
Offline
Seems to only do it in X, i think it is an nvidia driver problem myself.
But arch 32 bit is all ok. going to buy another hdd 2moro and reinstall 64bit and see how it goes with out nvidia drivers ?
Offline
@ japetto I was having lockups using the open source ati drivers but not had any problems since switching to the proprietary ATI driver. Think a setting in xorg.conf may have been the problem but don't know which one as I modified it quite a lot.
Offline
That's interesting, whompus. When I had the lockup issue I couldn't even ssh into my machine, which from what I know should be possible if it's just X locking up. Maybe it's something other than X that was the culprit. Unfortunately, no logs were written at those times.
Offline
my system locks up with OpenGL apps and the open ati drivers. i can't ssh in, either, just like you described, both on 64 and 32. i'd guess that was the culprit.
Offline
i have fglrx drivers on arch32. sometimes it locks up twice a day, sometimes not even once in two weeks . could this be connected with firefox freezing almost every day? i would try open-sourced drivers for ati but they don't support my card (yet).
Offline
Thinking about it more now, mine seemed to lock when web surfing with any browser, while doing other things it never locked.
I left my PC running with firefox open while i watched a movie and it locked, left my PC running with out a broser open and it didnt lock?? Could be coincedence?
Offline
Alright , seems to be something to do with Composite enabled with nvidia drivers under 64 bit arch. ANyone else having problems or heard of this before, its only 64bit not 32 .

I started experiencing the same hard lockups this morning -- so far I've had 4, and I'm concerned my harddisk is going to blow up if I keep just pulling the plug and resetting as it has to do a filesystem check and reboot again each time.
For me it happened while using Firefox also... I don't have beryl installed. I'm running the nvidia-71xx drivers on an old quadro2pro card. Things have been running fine until this morning -- I've only been using the box for a week prior, but had no problems. The only things I've done have been to install the ttf-bitstream-vera fonts and do some package housekeeping (uninstalling stuff I don't use -- like beryl, etc).
Anyhow, my theory (as crackpot as it might sound) is Firefox is causing the lock up when I'm loading multiple tabs.
I'm just about to try this (opening multiple tabs in Firefox) and if it locks again I'll reply here, otherwise I'll keep checking back to see if others have worked out the mystery.
Offline
Well I opened 20+ tabs and I'm still here
One thing I forgot to mention is that I deleted my ~/.mozilla directory after the last lockup (having exported/saved my bookmarks of course!) so perhaps if it *was* Firefox then that was the solution?
Needless to say if I crash again I'll be back -- otherwise, if you're crashing while using Firefox, do what I did. If that solves it then perhaps it's got to do with the latest releases of the browser not playing well with old files in ~/.mozilla

Wait a minute... I recently had an issue with bash locking up when I used powersaved on the laptop - I've currently disabled powersaved and planned to ask about it if it resurfaced after I was done getting the wireless working. Are the rest of you guys all using powersave? The latest one isn't a big update, just a modification to keep it from adding or removing the power group, but I'm starting to think it might somehow be bugged anyway.
Offline
I'm not using powersave (or at least I'm not aware of installing/running it)... I hardlocked again this afternoon. I've replaced my old Quadro2 with an old TNT2 that was laying around. We'll see if this makes a difference.
It seems in my case it's X, because I can still move the mouse cursor, I just can't alt-ctrl-backspace or alt-ctrl-fX to a terminal. Can't wait til I get a new video card and can use the latest drivers!

same here but i use fglrx, and i don't have powersave. the only thing i can do after a lockup is to move the mouse around. clicking and typing doesn't work. but with some lockups the windows change to white and gray squares and i can't even move the mouse. oh, and i don't use xgl.
