uh...couldn't think of a good title.
basically, i'm wondering if there's any file sharing thing out there that will allow me to open a video file off of a network and play it, without downloading it first. basically, i wanna be able to open a video fine, pick 10:24 or whatever, and the network will start grabbing data from that point.
i've tried samba so far, and it's failed
samba will download the whole file first before playing.

if you mean your own network, try NFS.

NFS, absolutely. If you have decent bandwidth and cpu, you could also look at sshfs, but there's the encryption overhead to consider.

hmmm, and the client has to be windows
i'll give NFS a shot, i need to get the unix services thingy for the NFS client.

if it's a windows client, then you're stuck with samba. NFS won't work with windows. the file should play without having to "download" it, though. you should see the share mounted and have access to the files just like a regular local mount.

No it doesn't. Samba does nothing of that sort.
Maybe the implementation your app is using does that, but not samba itself.
I know xine can "stream" from samba shares nowadays, at least with amarok/kaffeine/totem-xine (Noatun and some kde legacy apps behave bad though).
Many gstreamer apps can as well.
Either way, this is only true if you are using the smb:/ kio slave or gnome-vfs. If you use cifs (in linux) to mount the share to a local dir, _all_ applications should be able to use the file directly. (As if it would be on your local filesystem).
[edit]if the windows client does download it before viewing the file, it's either a bad application (since i do this all the time) or you smb.conf are messed up.[/edit]

i'm just using explorer with the \\server stuff.
and it appears that the program is the problem, as well as maybe the file type.
WMP streams a video file fine, while media player classic fails.
anyways, my plan isn't gonna work unless i upgrade my home network. streaming small files/mp3s is fine, but video is too much.

well, switching to LAN instead of wireless helps a crap load
