@dunkelstern, if you get bored, another (probably) easy minor hack would be to reduce the Border Size: Tiny option in Windows Decorations to a single 1 pixel border. Currently "Tiny" is 2 pixels wide and looks a bit kludgy compared to OSX borders. An option to select it's color would be even better but at least just a 1 pixel border size for Tiny would be excellent.
No I'm not getting bored, I am writing a pacman frontend for KDE currently
But to your request: That's a thing that depends on the window border style you chose. Just try others if you want a slimmer look. With "Baghira" you can even get original OSX look. Or just try "Laptop" that's very slim.
But if you want I could hack one of the decos you just have to tell me its name
I just have one question though: when I was using "normal" KDE in Arch my memory consumption after a clean start was usually s.th. like 90MB of used memory. Now with mdemod it is 160MB I really wonder what could be responsible for that! Are there any "usual suspects"? I really couldn't find a process that seems to be responsible for that. Strange...
EDIT: Oh and does anybody know when kicker-compiz will be updated so it will work with the new feature in KDE 3.5.7 to set other colors for the fonts in taskbar?
Do you have beagle/kerry enabled? That loads a shitload of libraries and the complete mono framework, so yes, that is a memory hog. That is one of the "usual suspects", another one might be composite that is used for the transparent rubberband effect (You may turn it off in the "desktop effects" section in Kcontrol)
About the update of "kicker-compiz"... sorry I don't know.

@dunkelstern, ah thanks for the prompting to go check out some themes and I decided to go with Domino which has a nice clean OSX look to it, with thin border, and rounded corners to boot. A very comfortable uncluttered theme, and the Tango icons top it off nicely.

Whow... that is a biiig kicker
Using Domino here too. Besides "Serenity" the best style out there imho.

Whow... that is a biiig kicker
It's 128px high and set to dissapear immediately with no animation so applications actually have full use of the screen. The double row of icons to the right of the AL start menu is "Quick Launcher" configured with 2 rows of 48px icons. The base font is Arial at 14pt which is just enough to control the desktop from 2 or 3 mtrs away on a HDTV. I find I have to go up to 24pt at 4+ mtrs. The image above is 50% reduced so the kicker is really twice as large as it appears in that screenshot.
I'm not sure why it took me so long to find the Domino theme, it's great! Thanks for kickstarting the idea of a non-default theme (duh!.. but then I hadn't seen anything much better than platinum to be bothered). Anyway, certainly no need to hardwire a hack for a single pixel border :-)
Woops, I take that back. I prefer to use the BII window decoration and that is what has the "Tiny" 2 pixel border width option. I guess if I look into theming it might be fairly easy to modify without any real hacking. I like to leave various windows open fullscreen and, without BII, I can't easily see what other windows are behind the current one, or bring a covered one forward with a single click. Now I remember why I have always used the BII window decoration. The ultimate, for me, would be to have the Domino theme with no-border + round corners + BII's smaller "smart titlebar". I hope I get some spare time to look into it.

I am missing the searchbar in Konqueror. Is it an extra package?
And konqueror displays some pictures wrong. I see some JPGs (i think it only appears when loading JPGs) with awful colors, reloading the image solves the problem. I will add a screenshot when the problem will appear the next time (i only recognize it 2-3 times a day, most pictures are loaded well).

It's in kdemod-kdeaddons-base I think...
@ funkyou:
I was wondering whether the dependency of kdemod-arts on qt-enhanced is necessary. Wouldn't just normal qt work?

I saw that some times too... I think this is something about that strange "offline browsing" patch or something with "http-slave" i'll try which one it is (I am not so a big fan of those two patches anyway, they cause errors for some people)

Is that important? I mean you'll need qt-enhanced anyway to use kdemod.

It would be helpfull when trying to use all the kdemod packages with vanilla qt, kdelibs and kdebase.

That won't work, too many patches. You would be very lucky if it works by accident. Dependencies are there for a reason.

Moved from KDE to KDEmod yesterday. Everything is working fine except one thing.
Gwenview cant play video files. I use it to see my images and when it finds a video file a get the follow errors, one after the other.
Can,t Init Audio Driver ΄alsasink΄ - trying another one...
No useable audio-driver found! (alsasink)
Gstreamer sin(s) missing, playbin could not be initialized!
After last error Gwenview crashes...
I installed gstreamer0.10-alsa and now I have a different error,
You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. You might need to install the necessary plugins.
Details: gstplaybasebin.c(2182): prepare_output (): /play
and now gwenview is not crashing and I can move to next image/video. This is happening with every video format.
Gstreamer was not necessary for playing video files be gwenview. Why is now? Did I miss a package?
All my media players can play the videos like before, with normal KDE. The only problem is with Gwenview
(Gwenview was uninstalled with pacman -R kde and I had to reinstall it after installing KDEmod)

Why shouldn't it work? It works for me since a you guys have released kdemod 3.5.6.
And also when looking at the kdemod PKGBUILDS it seems like there is only one package which has a patch that depends on a patch from kdebase and kdelibs which is kdeaddons and just changes the KHTML-Cache-Settings dailog a bit. But for some reason mine is still the same as in vanilla KDE so thats not a problem either.
Of course what I don't have is Kickoff which I don't need anyways.
But I really don't see why all the patches in qt, kdelibs and kdebase should be needed by the other kdemod packages...

Ok, then you're really lucky. But this is totally unsupported, if something breaks it's your problem
But the real problem isn't the dependency on qt-enhanced then. Other deps aren't there then too. Or am I wrong?

Looks like you only installed the gstreamer base packages. Do a "pacman -Ss gstreamer0.10" and install codecs.

I think you can switch Gwenview to the xine backend as that is what most players use, but I don't know how to do, I don't play my videos in Gwenview
(Gwenview was uninstalled with pacman -R kde and I had to reinstall it after installing KDEmod)
Did you read the installation instructions for KDEmod?
"pacman -R kde" removes the complete KDE install and ALL THE APPS THAT DEPEND ON IT!
You should have searched all your KDE packages with "pacman -Qs kde" and then uninstalled them one by one with "pacman -Rd <packagename>" (and of course uninstall qt and arts too). Notice the "d" in the pacman command, so no other packages would have been removed.

I'm willing to take the risk

Actually besides kdemod-kdelibs and kdemod-kdebase kdemod-arts is the only package that has a qt-enhanced dependency. So if I configure my vanilla kdelibs and kdebase to provide kdemod-kdelibs and kdemod-kdebase then the kdemod-arts' qt-enhanced dependency is the only one broken.

I understand that. But why do I have to install gstreamer with KDEmod and not with KDE? Gwenview doesn't allow me to choose another video engine. With KDE it uses xine engine and with KDEmod it requires (?) gstreamer.
This is really annoying, every time gwenview finds a video in my images directory, I have to press OK to 2-3 warnings dialogs. With KDE I could just skip the video with mouse wheel.
Thats exactly what I did. With pacman -R I removed KDE (this also removed Gwenview), I searched for other packages with pacman -Qs kde and finally I removed qt and arts. Then I wanted Gwenview and I did a pacman -S gwenview. From then, Gwenview wants gstreamer. Don΄t know why, but Gwenview acts weird in KDEmod.

I don't know. I just checked and it works here.

It seems you have some kind of faulty installation. Reinstall Gwenview and gstreamer, perhaps that helps.

No, you are missing the "d", use "pacman -Rd" then it won't uninstall all packages that depend on kde.
Then I wanted Gwenview and I did a pacman -S gwenview. From then, Gwenview wants gstreamer. Don΄t know why, but Gwenview acts weird in KDEmod.
Gwenview doesn't depend on either xine or gstreamer, it uses the "kmediaplayer" kpart, perhaps that one went wrong. Try installing "kdemod-kdemultimedia-base".
Interesting , I'll see what I can do about this.

hard reset and everything was ok.
Seems a little flakey to me, but nice work otherwise.

You can identify possible memory hogs with xrestop... just install and run it.
EDIT: Oh and does anybody know when kicker-compiz will be updated so it will work with the new feature in KDE 3.5.7 to set other colors for the fonts in taskbar?
Maybe there is a chance to include the original color patch into taskbar-kicker... We will check that, but there is no guarantee as its an external package...

Well, i dont get the point with your question, because you have anwered it for yourself already.
Yes, the button is gone. And now it seems that you are the only one using this button
I removed the button because i never use it (as many others) because its just horrible to use. Its just more work to get a fresh wallpaper with it and you are faster when you simply use your browser, and not this micro window with its ultra-small previews where you have to spend more clicks on just getting a wallpaper from only one site (kde-look).
Anyway, i have a good message for you if you want to keep the button:
We are preparing a small feature survey where users can choose the features they want for KDEmod. I, for example, never use the Kickoff menu because it also needs more clicks to start my apps, and its also the only reason why we have to do some hacks here and there and must use unsermake (and split kdebase). I mean, it was a little hype some months ago to have this menu included, but really: Who really uses this menu for a longer time than a week or so?? Thats only my opinion, and we will see who really wants to have this included...
I am not a friend of the idea to modify packages because one user asks for it while most others doesnt seem to have a problem with it... As you seem to modify and mix some packages, its unsupported and clearly on your side to make it work... And please just dont ask about those changes, because you can do it much more effective: Just fetch our PKGBUILDs, make your changes, doument them and then send us your changes per mail... So we can imagine much better what you want and we can also test it without changing much stuff just for one user...
