Making a server to get files

Hello,

I must give a friend over 6GB of data. There is no posiblity of doing this via CD-R or DVD, so, the best option is via the network. This, would only occur once, so, it isn't necesary that the server would be open all days. Only, open it, get the files, and close it.

So, starting from i have no experience in this kind of things, and, that i'm terrified of doing this (i'm also thinking to do an install in another partition only for this), this is what i've thought:

- web server: too much for such thing
- ssh server: no need for writing so...
- ftp: this seems to be the best option

So, you experts ;-) what is the easiest and safest ftp server. The perfect config file would be ;-):
Deny: all
Allow: my friend's IP
User: myfriend
passwd: an hypermegaextrangepasswd
Permissions: r--
Directory to show: /"where the files are"

Another way that have came to my head, is using bittorrent, something like private torrent, with passwd and so on...

Thanks

Take a look at WinSCP: http://winscp.net/eng/index.php

Re: Making a server to get files

Thanks all, i'll take a look to those software.

but, perhaps, what i'll do, after resolving the initial question, is create a new install, probe some ftp servers, ssh, play with them, learning to secure it, and so on, and, finally, when i'll feel good with the final option, install it in arch.

Well, if you're worried about security... stay away from FTP. Heh.
SSH/SCP is probably your best, more secure, bet. And it's easy to setup wink

Yeah, i always listen that ssh is very easy to configure but...

I'd like to explain better what i mean by "worried about security". I don't refer to trasmit things in text plain, well, i prefer to trasmit encripted or something similar :-) but, what i mean, is that i'm absolutily worried about someone out there, using a vulnerability or something, will get the control of my computer. :-(

I think, that, althought i'll properly configure the server, always, always, will do something bad, and my PC will be "hacked".

Hey! i know it's a bit embarrasing for me :-), as it remembers me like "fear by no-knowledge".  Something like "that diabolic thing stole my soul"!!!! " (a photograph). So, without proper knowledge, and knowing what there is out there, i'm a bit "paranoic" ;-) Do you know what i mean?

As always... You need to know what you're doing before setting anything like this up, unless of course you're both on the same network behind a firewall and you have diabled all port-forwarding...

Best you read up on a secure mechanism than an insecure mechanism. Give you some advantage if you had to do it again.
The wiki for setting up openssh is actualy quite good... openssh is also available for winXP, so you'd have the advantage of similar configuration on both ends... wink

And to quote our dear friend Kurt
