Sluggish computer without internet

I discovered a weird problem yesterday when my ISP decided to screw up my internet connection. With networking on but no link to the outside world, my arch box performed very sluggish, it could take 3-5 minutes for the gnome panel to startup and all graphical applications performed similarly bad. The second i turned the network off it performed normal again, i tested this several times with the same result.
Does anyone know what it is that needs the internet so bad that it drags down my system in abcense of it?

Re: Sluggish computer without internet

I had the same problem and this solves it:

Append the value of HOSTNAME from your rc.conf to /etc/hosts.
Example if HOSTNAME=myhost in rc.conf then your hosts file becomes

127.0.0.1               localhost.localdomain   localhost   myhost
