Network problem: browsers work, terminal connection doesn't

Here's a problem I've never encountered.  I looked around the forums and haven't found any other reports of it.  I tried to update via Pacman this morning, but nothing happened.  I tried pinging a few external sites, but did not receive any data back.  I did my last upgrade about 2 weeks ago.

What's weird is that my other network apps--browsers, newsreaders, P2P--all work fine.

I don't appear to have any firewall in force.  I have iptables installed, but not starting.  I noticed that iptables was recently upgraded so I moved back to the earlier version, just in case.  Didn't help.

I'm stumped and would appreciate some leads on how to proceed in diagnosing the problem.

Thanks.

Bob

Followup:  I'm now thinking the problem is with my ISP.  I just tried pinging with my son's Windows machine.  No luck.  I'll call their customer service.
