Firefox & thinderbird file handling

Hi all,
I have a problem that, besides been common to many people, it's taking me mad since the proposed "solutions" don't work with me.

The problem is explained in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=33303: there's no application selection when I click on a pdf, or on a doc or ppt and so on. I have libgnome installed, and I have the same problem even when running kde-mod or xfce4 (I didn't try with other WMs).

Any help?

You should install the MIME-edit extension, this gives you a dialog for editing actions based on filetype..
