Hey, is it at all possible to have pxe server (doesn't matter if I need to use a different distro), that is not also a dhcp server? We have a dhcp server at school on a Novell server, but the system admin (not a true system admin), won't let me play around with the Novell server to try to get a pxe boot working. Who can blame him. So I would like to take a linux box and put just us it as a pxe boot server. I can't seem to find anythign online though. Any help would be great!

pxe requires certain options to be passed to a booting client (via dhcp).
You can house the tftp instance on another server, but the dhcp server still has to specify the required info.
So..mark that as a "no" i guess.
You could always set up a test network (not connected to the real network), and run your own test dhcp server.
