Is this good enough, or is professional hosting necessary?

Hi, I'm going to launch a site some time in the future, and is thinking about server.

My internetconnection is 1/1 mbit, with my stepfathers machine doing p2p all day all night, and my brothers all evening, don't know the exact upload for those two, though, but you might get the picture. The machine I have in mind to run the server on is a 1ghz AMD64 machine with 512mb's of RAM.

The expected number of unique visitors pr. day will vary between 50 and 300. The site will include quite a lot of pictures(in the design) but the expected primary download will be the lots of text on the site.

Is this setup suited for my goal, or will I need to rent some professional hosting?

If you cap the p2p apps to not abuse your upload it would probably work though it might be a bit slow. If I were you I would try it first and then decide if I needed something faster, after all, it's cheaper if you can host it yourself.

Just so you are aware: once you host a public server for a month or so, script kiddies will most likely be raping your ass.  I had a HTTP/FTP/streaming MP3 server going at my place for a while, and for about a year after taking it down, my router was constantly locking up from attacks.  So I setup a smoothwall firewall and man oh man, there was a lot of crap spewing around.  If you wanna host a server, don't plan on running any naked Windows machines or home-style networking equipment.  $0.02.
