We are discussing this right now, but about ET being the only one you've played, well, I encourage you to play tremulous give it a spin, and see how great it is.;)

wow, go away for a few days and boom \o/
OK background
A few months ago a few of us on #gentoo-chat were getting really excited with QuakeWars (around the time a few of us got into the beta-testing) we conceved Distro-Wars the idea kinda spung up after someone had a spat in #ubuntu iirc.
Distro-x > Distro-y is pointless from where I stand (see the other gentoo vs arch thread here ) but such things will always exist so we thought why not put our money/skill where our mouth is and well.... blow up other distro users \o/
so we jacked into #debian and got a few ppl interested in a quick gentoo-debian game of....
we then started trying to sort out something more official (a digg was made, an IRC channel... and such), but the problem was it takes alot of organisation and we kinda under-estimated what we were seeding (lots-of interest, just noone to help manage and 3ppl just aint enough).
With a few of use in #gentoo-chat getting really into QuakeWars (check out http://larrytheclan.com/QW.html) and others waiting for the linux-client (some of us just couldn't wait those few weeks till end of Oct) the topic of distrowars was raised again BUT this time doing it proporly to get it really working (such potential).
The idea is that any free game (tremulous,W:ET,...) can be suggested since we can all get it.
Purchase-only games (eg UT2004, QuakeWars,... and their mods) dependent if enough ppl from both distro's have it
Games via WINE.... same as above (and prob not with debian-lot )
Distro-specific tweaks allowed (eg re-emerging openal with reduces USE flags for increase performance [does work \o/] ), but obviously no cheats/hacks.
....
the list can obviously grow
The problem last time was administrating and under-estimating how popular it would be. This time round we want to take it a bit slower and keep it low-key to get the foundations established.
IE we have some games kinda organised here/gentoo forums/IRC unnoficial like while the website is resurected (and a form of forum created). Then once that is running we open it up to the other distro's one at a time so spread the wings a bit while figuring out the best way to have some form of league/schedual/table before the floodgates are fully opened
Gentoo-linux already has a loose-net clan kind of thing ( [Gen2] tag ) that any gentoo gamers gaming in gentoo would wear (well we did with UT2004 but kinda died now). A few of us in #gentoo-chat are in [moo] (as in larry the gentoo cow) BUT distrowars was ment to go beyond a gaming clan and be more like Gentoo's [Gen2] system, Any gamer of the distro can join in.
We have ~6ppl on #gentoo-chat that are game (almost) anytime, but want to seed it on the gentoo-forums as well to get other ppl in on this.

start up #distrowars, so people can randomly organise scrims or just agree to descend on particular pub servers.
Possibly include a bot, to which people can submit server IP's for various games, and others in the channel can query it to see what other people are playing.
And of course get people to put distro as their tag, so us [arch]'ers can see how many distros we can easily frag

Yeah, I already am tagging myself with arch linux on tremulous, so let me know of any news Naib, I'm always in #gentoo-chat and #archlinux. I am waiting for the Linux client for quake wars and unreal tournament 3. I gave up on Windows and have no installation of it in my pc, I don't want any dependence on that piece of garbage they call an OS.;)

QuakeWars would be nice. I tried the windows demo and it's quite funny even if I am a damn noob. :-) A distro-wars using wine is a no-go imho.

shining is right, nexuiz is really slow
in general:
+1 for Tremulous
...and: Why not play Sauerbraten ?
+1 for sauerbraten/cube2

I agree. In general, I would only use games that run nativly under Linux, to proof real distrowar matches.

done, I have /invite ChanServ so it should be along at some point (to hold the channel) but since my home server is on 24/7 I can park in there
I have been after a real reason to write an IRC-bot and you have given me one so will start work on it
Where games to be hosted? between jacking an empty server, a clanmate of mine who can use one of his home servers for game-server every now and again (we had an ET one for some time, working on sorting an QuakeWars server instead) and the occasional home-user with enough bandwidth we should be ok.... for now. If it grows may have to look into a central server somewhere (or a couple) who knows
Got a few interests on the gentoo forum (for other games as well as management)
Guess I better go pull a scrim together
As I said last time the issue was organisation and management, thats why if it can start of just gentoo vs Arch to get it rooted then it has a chance.

Still, point of the bot is anyone can advertise what server they're on for whatever game, regardless. Makeing it nice and easy for any linux user to find a game against others.
It also sorts out all the organisation. I suppose as clans develop, they'd be able to organise things themselves.

good point, just use the bot to do the logistics.
give me a bit and will be able to submit match-requests to it

+ 1 for Nexuiz, it's free in both ways & can run on a wide variety of spec's. This would surely attract a wider audience than QW or UT, not to mention that I've been practicing
PS. Tremulous, I just don't get it

I see, tremulous, is the number one choice, so I think we should play it. So people, can we make a clan? Well, I'm already tagging myself as {Archer} after my nickname, so you can do the same and see if we find each other, I often hand at PureTremulous and PureTremulous2, servers. See all of you there.

If the Gentooers win you can blame it on their optimized binaries!

why not a classic mp game? +1 for q3 & cpma
