Hello !
I am new to arch linux, but i like it
I am surprised to not having found any topic about win32 codecs, neither on tthe wiki, nor on the forums !
So i i think we should start it here, a detailed howto !
And request a package with win32 codecs in extra or community.
Then create a wiki
So what do you think ?

There are codecs in the "codecs" package. Those are the same win32codecs codecs you find elsewhere.
http://www.archlinux.org/packages/searc … =&limit=50
Use the search box on the home page to find packages. You will see a list of packages that match your keyword as well as a detailed description if you click the package name.
Also, you can look for packages using pacman itself by issuing:
pacman -Ss codecs
Replace "codecs" with any keyword you want. If you want to look for package names only, then:
pacman -Sl | grep keyword
Welcome to Arch community, and have a nice arch experience.

Thanx for this quick answer, and i am honoured to make part of the community.
But my machine is a 64 amd.
SO maybe thats why the codecs wont setup properly ( package size 0,8 mb, strange isnt it ? )

What codecs are you missing?

well for exmple, kaffeine shows now win32codecs are installed, go to blablabla.
Trying to play a mms stream ( micro$oft ) fails, trying real, fails ...
But playing normal avi is okay

I've never tried mms streams, but maybe you could give mplayer a shot? It has the plugin that works with FireFox, and a kmplayer frontend for KDE. It's not as slick as Kaffeine, but it will play the hell out of most videos.

VLC also. MMS is not a codec, it's a protocol, so the Win32 codec package won't help you until playback time.

humm, skottish : kaffeine outputs this message : xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL

The strange thing is that from what I can tell, Kaffeine should be able to handle MMS. Is this the only error that you're receiving? That error is seriously common, but all of the posts I read so far have to do with CSS encrypted DVDs (lack of libdvdcss installed).

Humm, well here is the detailed message if that could help :
04:10:15 AM: xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL [mms://stream.polskieradio.pl/Program]
04:10:15 AM: xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [mms://stream.polskieradio.pl/Program]
04:10:15 AM: libmmsh: http status not 2xx: >503 Service Unavailable<
04:10:08 AM: xine: found input plugin : mms streaming input plugin
Any ideas ?

I get a similar error when using VLC to play that stream on Arch64. I have never played a mms stream before so I can't know for sure if it is a software error or a problem with the stream. The "503 Service Unavailable" makes me think the server is broken. Are you sure it works?
access_mms error: error while asking for file -1

MMS works fine in VLC and MPlayer, but the link you posted above doesn't work in either. MPlayer is also reporting the 503 error.

Shit! And grrrr!
Sabotage? maybe. MS has a funny way of intentionally mutating things to their advantage. Emotional insecurity at its best...
Sorry I couldn't help.

Hmm ... maybe it's the divinity of his pants, 'cuz I couldn't get a connection with anything in Linux or Windows. I tried Foobar2000, Quintessential Player, VLC, Windows Media Player, and WinAmp 5.5 Anniversary Edition in Windows.

Well, my Trousers never lie
Here is a snapshot of winamp buffering the stream
And here is the snapshot of winamp playing it :
Humm, real player plays it too, mediaplayer classic too.
The fact is that i have on windows the klite codecs installled, maybe MrWeatherbee doesnt have the necessary codecs and thats why he cant play them i don't know.

Amen.
Edit:
Guess I should have also added that I was able to play other streams in Linux and Windows, but just couldn't get
mms://stream.polskieradio.pl/Program
to play no matter what kind of pants I wore.
Here's just one sample of a stream that does play:
mms://wm5.abacast.com/jazztrax
Can you post the 'stream and media' info for the stream if you can obtain it from a player (WinAmp) that plays it? Not sure where to get that in WinAmp as I'm not at a WinAmpified PC right now, but I'm looking for something similar to the info provided by VLC -> Stream and Media Info > Advanced Info Tab.
Thanks.

That's alright. You definitely proved your honesty on this, though ... I bet it was tough making those posts admitting what happened.
Anyway, it's working here now, too. I'm listening to, but not understanding, Polish. Every once in a while I here someone say, "democratic", "president", "parliament", and "correspondent".
Have fun.

lol
yeah, polish media usually talk about politics, besides, the elections are near, so ...
but i hear it mainly for the music

holytrousers, I'm glad it got it working!
Regarding your question about missing codecs: I have used Arch64 for about 6 months now and I can't recall coming across a media file I couldn't play. You'll find that the win32 codecs are not nearly as much use as they once were. The FFmpeg project has been making excellent progress and has written replacement codecs for a number of the 32 bit binary only codecs provided in the win32codecs packages.
