hi. i was wondering if this driver would work on an x1950 pro agp card?
my system locks up using 8.40.4 but this one just crashes out with the following message when i try to start x(II) Loading local sub module "GLcore" (II) LoadModule: "GLcore" (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libGLcore.so (II) Module GLcore: vendor="X.Org Foundation" compiled for 7.2.0, module version = 1.0.0 ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3 (II) GLX: Initialized MESA-PROXY GL provider for screen 0 Backtrace: 0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x84) [0x80d0574] 1: [0xb7f6c420] 2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b9ba24] 3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b9509c] 4: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b283fb] 5: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b3a196] 6: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b273d9] 7: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b50c12] 8: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b3eebd] 9: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5b40469] 10: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5ac76e3] 11: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5abcf88] 12: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5abd670] 13: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so(esutInit+0x74) [0xb5abc484] 14: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so [0xb5ab817b] 15: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//glesx.so(GlesxExtensionInit+0x9b) [0xb5ab73fb] 16: X(InitExtensions+0xb2) [0x80edea2] 17: X(main+0x2af) [0x806e39f] 18: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe0) [0xb7d6af90] 19: X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0xa9) [0x806d8b1] Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. any ideas?
thanks,
ad.
I have the same problem.
I want to use stable for everythin except these drivers, is it possible to only use fglrx from testing? This is what I tried but it didn't work like i hoped.

Enable testing in your pacman.conf. pacman won't update everything what's newer in testing. Then install it: "pacman -S testing/fglrx testing/fglrx-utils"

Hi twarkie!
what exact card do you have?
If it's a AGP card and it's not an X1950Pro but X1000 series still, then there is a bug in fglrx that causes X to crash with AGP cards...
BTW: iv'e been trying to install 8.35 drivers from ati page, but when X's started i've got version mismatch...
i don't see myself recompiling old X.org just to be able to watch HD video, i don't have neither the time nor willingness to do it

I have a 9600xt, so a guess that is why X wont start.
robotangel: that's what I did...an now I know why it didn't work
When I'm playing videos with the current fglrx driver, the movie flickers, so I would like to see if a new driver fixes this. I don't really know if it is driver related, but I didn't find any other solution on the Internet

this driver is for r400, r500 and r600 cards, 9600xt is a r300 card
use OSS driver (xorg-x11-driver-video-radeon), it's stable, has working 3D and 2D acceleration, and it supports AIGLX and suspend, what else do you want?

actually, afaik, it doesn't claim to properly support r400 either.

TV-out? That's what's kept me on fglrx for a looong time with my own 9600

it does claim to support only r600 BUT it works (according to people at Phronix forums) also with r400 and r500 but doesn't with r300. One way or another 8.41 won't work with 9600xt.

Oh, right, my bad
I'm starting to wonder whatever fglrx drivers don't need more versions in repos (like the nVidia drivers):
- 8.41 for HD2xxx users
- 8.35 (?) for AGP users of X1xxx
- 8.28 for 8500/9000/9100/9200/9250 users
and finally
- 8.40 for anyone else
i'm just delurious or would it give something?
i just hope that 8.42 will be so ZOMGAWESOME that it will work with everything, everywhere, will cure cancer and be solution for world hunger, just my small wish

Moved them out of testing and into my personal webspace at http://www.archlinux.org/~travis/pkg - they were being a nuisance in testing.
8.42 will be the next release to hit extra, if everything goes well.

BTW, I've been using that driver for a long time now
Works ok. Sometimes unstable and hangs, and some problems with video quality / playback.
But, theres one really weird problem: I can't launch amdcccle?
[root@desktop mikko]# amdcccle
Session management error: Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed
Anyone else experiencing this?

try as the user running X
$ xhost +localhost
or
$ xhost +local:root
first allowes all local users connect to your X, second grants this privilige only to root
hope it helps

Well amdcccle permissions still broken... I don't mind anymore since:
Leaked 8.42 review on ubuntu forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … stcount=12
Driver is prolly out on monday
BTW:
In addition to the AIGLX support, the fglrx 8.42.4 driver includes X.Org server 1.4 support, video playback improvements, more performance improvements, and Rialto AGP fixes. While this driver quite promptly supports X.Org 7.3 / X server 1.4, it does not contain Linux 2.6.23 kernel support. The Linux 2.6.23 support isn't found in fglrx 8.42.4 due to issues with x86_64 support. However, we do expect that fglrx 8.43 will contain the Linux 2.6.23 kernel support.
SO with this driver i should get compiz-fusion and new xorg from testing to work
Weird part is im using the 2.6.23 kernel with fglrx and it seems to work for me just fine, and there should be some patches to make it work if it doesnt.
I'm kinda excited, i hope I get all these new technologies to work ^^

Weird, I'm using 8.40.4 with kernel26 2.6.23 here and I don't experience any (big) problems except ksplash doesnt seem to like me anymore (just crashes...)
Well, I have no problem with downgrading as long as I finally get a good driver then...

Damnit, waited almost a year for AIGLX enabled drivers and just yesterday my 9600pro died.

If the new driver would arrive today it'd be really ironic.
But since there are no further activities yet, will you buy another ATI or will u take the Chance to switch to nvidia ?

It's here! 8.42 is out.

yayyyyyyyy! I'll try to get this packaged in the next couple of days - the moment I get free time it'll get done. I'm as excited about this as the rest of you.

It supports AIGLX? Isn't it?

Sure, 8.42 supports AIGLX. But it doesn't work with 2.6.23 kernel, but I think it will be fixed.

2.6.23 support is planned for 8.43, afaik. I have a couple patches kicking around that should make it work, hopefully.

I'm using fglrx 8.40.4 at the moment and have reduced performance in UrbanTerror since I updated to kernel 2.6.23. I'm not sure if it has to do with network lags or graphic issues, as the framerate is still quite good. I haven't got an old kernel around to test it though. (What was that mirror with the old packages again?) Is there any fglrx-user experiencing similiar things?
I can't use 8.41.7 due to some bugs which let UrbanTerror freeze, btw.
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

(...)and Rialto AGP fixes.
F**g finally
can't wait to see it in the arch repo
Edit:
my bad, it's already in the repo, but why it's in testing, not extra?
If the things will go this way all the way, AMD's decision to buy ATI could become one of the best decisions...
Especially for the linux users

I put it there for a little while because many users on phoronix (myself included) are reporting problems with 8.42.3 that make it unusable for them. I'm giving it a 'breaking in' period here, is all. I'll probably bump it down to extra soon enough.

@stylopath
Got a Geforce 4200TI for assembling a new PC for a friend today. Performs quite good considering the age of that card.
I won't upgrade my current setup because im saving for a notebook and all models i considered till now have nvidia gpus.

ok. i've installed it and running it now. I've run into few bumps but i had partially installed 8.35 or 8.36 before so it's probably the cause.
before I say anything about my problems: i'm running Athlon X2 3800+ with 1GiB of RAM and Radeon X1950Pro AGP, so it's not a bad PC
sadly XVideo still doesn't work properly, and by this i mean: 640x480 xv accelerated video is choppy (yes, i have enabled TexturizedVideo); by contrast X11 gives 45% CPU usage on one core, so it runs smooth, but then i can't scale it up
what's more, mplayer gl and gl2 gives the same results as XV so i still can't watch movies in linux
amdcccle still doesn't work (just doesn't show any window, process is running)
Nexuiz with anisotropic filtering is broken (half of the screen isn't drawn)
i've got problems running Nexuiz fullscreen (screen turned blank) but it could be the result that i'm running my desktop at 1792x1344 and Nexuiz doesn't seem to support it
on the bright side:
openGL *is* faster and the driver claims (both the xorg and kernel module) to finally initialize AGP
Nexuiz with everything turned on but anisotropic and HDR/Bloom is nearly playable in 1024x768 (around 20fps with two models in view shooting)
Nexuiz with default effects settings + highquality textures @ 1600x1200 is running at around 30fps with 3-4 bots fighting in view
neverball is running in the 120fps+ range @ 1600x1200
i still didn't try running compiz/beryl but it shouldn't be problematic at this stage
and i don't know what's the Half-Life 2 speed, i'll have to install it
in general, 4/5 release
sorry for my miserable english, it's my third language ; )

Well... The driver aint perfect but if I'd have to choose between the old .40 series or this one...
I'd take this one anytime.
So compiz ain't that usable but works... no showstopper.
XV video quality a bit blocky, but atleast it works, and i can finally play HD files/ movies without slideshow. so no showstopper either.
Amdcccle doesnt work but not a showstopper.
New xorg works but weird mouse with it... no showstopper but would be nice if it would be fixed.
Performance lot better.
So all in all I'd vote for it to go in official repos
