What about the artifact-issues (mouse-pointer, overlapping windows)? Any improvements with 8.42.3?
I would like to back this post with a screenshot but right then when you need an artifact, there is none.

I am personally still getting corruption in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen and under my mouse with this release.

Are you using non-default power states?
$ aticonfig --lsp
core/mem [flags]
-----------------
* 1: 111/111 MHz [low voltage]
2: 317/209 MHz [default state]

I'm using a desktop PC and a Radeon 9600XT; I never touch the powerstates, and last I checked I only had one to begin with.
I've found the release notes (even though AMD/ATI haven't updated their site with ANY info about this driver yet... suspicious...) here: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.42.3.html
They still recommend that 8.40.4 be the version we keep in our official repos. However, if we move xorg-server 1.4 out of testing, we'll need 8.42.3, so I'll leave it in [testing] until xorg-server moves. If we get a new, more stable, release before then, then it'll be better for all.
