Is there a distro which officially supports reiser4 or ext4. Which allows creating root on a reiser4. I am using a laptop with just 40gb HDD so i cannot create a separate partitions and copy past things.

Not sure about reiser4 because even opensuse moved from reiser to ext3 as their default filesystem. But since reiser4 will be their last version, I wouldn't really invest into that filesystem (just my opinion).
But as far I know, ext4 is still in development.

Might be a good idea to do some research before you go and dive in and try new filesystems.
You'll find that you've got no reason to run ext4 at all. You'll also find that reiser4 isnt so peachy and probably isnt worth the trouble.

Well, in future archlinux releases ZFS from sun would be a great addition...

That would be awesome, but I'm afraid that the license issues are still unresolved, ZFS is distributed under a Sun license (CDDL) which is incompatible with Linux' GPL...

Thanks for the inputs guys.

I use Arch with Reiser 3. I originally started using it because it was touted as the fasted FS around. It does seem pretty fast, but I wonder if ext3 with nodiratime and noatime would be just as fast. I suspect so.
Ext3 seems like the best to use, simply because it is the most widely developed. I think harddrives themselves are whats really slowing things down these days. Until we start adopting new technologies like MRAM, even the 10000 RPM Raptor is still too slow.
