Good day!
I tried to read connecting topics, however, I didn't have any luck.
My problem is the following:
I want to set up Wireless Networking on my HP Compaq nx8220 laptop, however, I can't manage it, and seems like I have something concerning the Kill Switch problem, only a bit worse. I can use the Wireless on/off button on the machine itself, which seems to be working - the led glows after a touch and stops glowings after another. It doesn't really work, though -- no matter, what state the led shows, iwconfig eth1 (eth1 is my wireless device) shows "radio off":
eth1 radio off ESSID:"friczynet"
Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: Not-Associated
Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power=off Sensitivity=8/0
Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I tried to grab a portable version of Windows Vista in order to try to enable Wireless from there -- the led started to glow there as well, but I didn't get the chance to test networking from there, since that part prompted an error about something missing.
My question is: What next?

Do you have the right driver installed? What type of network card do you have?

Just FYI, if you had that rf_kill problem, eth1 would not even show up so there's hope here...

derp@xLaptop ~> lspci | grep Wireless
02:04.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (rev 05)
I have installed the following driver:
core/ipw2200-fw 3.0-1
Intel Centrino Drivers firmware for IPW2200

The manual rf_kill switch is located in /sys:
$ su -
Password:
# echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/*/rf_kill
0 will turn the radio on, 1 will turn it off. I tried to replicate your problem on my laptop while keeping the rf_kill switch off and I got the same iwconfig you did, so I think this will fix your problem.

No, I've already tried it, doesn't work, stays at 2.

Try to boot with the radio switched off. Then when you try to connect to the network and the driver detects its off, turn it on. Might help.
Secondly check if you can set up your bios so that the switchkey is turned off, so the radio is permanently on.
Succes

Already tried both, no success, however, I'll try again when I get to my computer.
