Re: Slackware the last big distro to have Xfree86 4.4 switches

Well, X.org is a fork of XFree86 before the license change. Its a matter of renaming XF86Config to xorg.conf or something like that.

And perhaps more importantly, it seems as if xfree is going to be more or less behind xorg in development.

After putting it on 6 BSD boxes (one didn't work, didn't bother figuring out why, just went back to XFree on that one) put it on one of my Arch boxes.
I'm not a gamer, and just use X for graphic web browsing, to have multiple terms handy and a few games like lbreakout2, so I'm not one who will note slight performance differences (or the other things that heavy duty gamers might note).

It's pretty much the same, and packages that depend upon X seem to use it without problem.

Re: Slackware the last big distro to have Xfree86 4.4 switches

as far as I know, x.org adheres to the same well defined interfaces for communication between the X server and the client. It is just the lisence and some under the hood stuff that is being reworked. I don't know for how long this will be the case, though..

Re: Slackware the last big distro to have Xfree86 4.4 switches

So you could basically install X.org with the same drivers (like NVidia) intact? So if I wanted to try out X.org (what I am now interested in) I wouldn't have to touch my NVidia driver in this case?

And how can you make Arch pick X.org as the default X server? If you install Fluxbox or KDE? (or later if you want to change the X server, would you have to remove XFree86?).

nvidia works ok [without reinstalling as far as I remember]

add in /etc/pacman.conf
[testing]
Server = ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/testing

and then pacman -Sy x

x will remove xfree86.
With kde, gnome etc you don't have any [serious] problems

Thnx, that's great. Could you also tell me what I need to do in case I re-install Arch Linux so it will pick up X.org by default instead of XFree86?

Umm... you can wait a little while and x.org will be in current... But until then, you have to add testing to your /etc/pacman.conf and pacman -S x before any other X apps.

"a while" could be a long time though.

A little birdie told me that X.org might be in current by 0.7, but same birdie said 0.7 would be out around May 10, so I'd say that speculation on the subject is fruitless. :-D

I don't see why Arch should hurry up moving to xorg. The two are now technically almost identical. In following releases xorg will leave xfree behind, but we have plenty of time before that.

Just make the switch as painless as possible.

How hard is this little change from xfree to x.org, will my nvidia drivers still work with it?  :?:

Yes they will work since x.org is a fork of the last Xfree86 release with the old license.
