madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

Hi Everyone,

After upgrading my system to the latest sync, it seems that my madwifi wireless has stopped working. It works fine by downgrading back to the 2.6.22 line, but this should be a temporary thing. Running:

modprobe ath_pci countrycode=840

Loads the modules for madwifi without any errors, however there is no device created as a result (ie ath0).

Has anyone else had this problem? All suggestions and fixes would be appreciated :-)

Thanks in Advance!

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

Funny you should mention madwifi, I just installed an atheros card today. Set up and working with absolutely no hitches. Does the wifi0 device appear? Any interesting output when you type 'dmesg | tail' just after you insert the module?

After upgrading kernel, there was no ath0 device. So I've installed madwifi-svn and it's hanging linux.

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

@Bralkein: No device is created at all, there is not even a wlan or wifi device created. I tried to see if the wlan and ieee80211 modules were loaded and they were all properly loaded (ie the same modules are loaded under the 2.6.22 kernel line and it works properly).

I still have not resolved the issue, so if you have any suggestions, please keep them coming! smile

Thanks.

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

Umm... well all I can think of is that all you guys upgraded to kernel 2.6.23 and then your driver stopped working, whereas I only installed the driver yesterday, when kernel 2.6.23 was already installed. So... maybe try uninstalling the package then reinstalling it?

Nah, I upgraded the madwifi package and it's working here. I'm using testing, but there aren't different madwifi or kernel packages in testing.

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

@Bralkein, stonecrest: So both of you have it working properly, but did you have to do any kind of special configuration? Linking dev nodes or something, or did it work out of the box?

Post Scriptum: I'm going to try to make a custom kernel using sources/ABS and see what happens

I haven't done anything special. I did have a problem with a previous version of madwifi though.

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

I've done nothing special myself, no. When the module is loaded, the ath0 interface is created automatically and works as advertised. When you modprobe your module, is there any output shown from dmesg?

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

@Bralkein: No special messages from dmesg seem to be found, I have the following output which is normal

ath0: no IPv6 routers present
ath0: no IPv6 routers present
ath0: no IPv6 routers present
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): ath0: link is not ready
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): ath0: link becomes ready
ath0: no IPv6 routers present

Other than that, everything looks O.K. except for the fact that the ath0 or any other equivalent interface is not created :-/

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

Alright, so I went ahead and re-installed the new kernel and lo and behold, the ath0 device re-appears after its hiatus. So this case is closed, unless someone else can find another fault.

Thanks everyone for giving suggestions for this strange problem which seems to have resolved itself.

Cheers,

I have a core2duo macbook... I simply had to recompile madwifi from SVN after the 2.6.23 upgrade and it worked flawlessly.

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

@cyr0x

Well I installed madwifi from svn yesterday, but no luck so far, also, since my last update, the touchpad is acting very weird (it is unuseable). I hope that with the next updates things get better.

To the people who have a core2 macbook with madwifi working: are you using Arch64 or Arch32?? (I'm using Arch64)

@tpowa

Sorry, I didn't see your post until now. It seems to be working fine now with madwifi from current (0.9.3.3.3006-1).

Just wanted to add that I had this same problem a few weeks ago, and it works wonderfully after this update.

Thanks!

Re: madwifi broken with latest kernel line (2.6.23)

kernel 2.6.23.9-1 and madwifi 0.9.3.3.3006-1
And I have "MadWifi: unable to attach hardware: 'Hardware revision not supported' (HAL status 13)" in dmesg with my AR2413-based dlink nic, which worked perfectly with September's 2.6.22.
wtf ?
