Loose connection randomly, restarting gives "Error, eth0: timed out"

I randomly gets disconnected from the network without any message or anything in the main terminal, if i try to do a "/etc/rc.d/network restart" it looks like this:

:: Stopping Network [DONE]
:: Starting Network [BUSY]
Error, eth0: timed out
[DONE]

I haven't experienced this on Windows yet, so I doubt it's my hardware,http://bbs.archlinux.org/post.php?fid=8
Arch Linux Forums / Post new topic but I've recently experienced that my network suddently is GONE .. I use the sky2 driver (I heard that sk98lin is not maintained) for my gigabyte motherboard the model: GA-965P-DQ6 and it has the: Gigabit LAN Controller (Marvell 8056) ..

A reboot makes me connect again, but rebooting once in a while is a bad thing, this is not Windows tongue ..

I had the same problem with a Gigabyte motherboard and the on-board Marvel LAN. The network would drop unexpectedly and it would not restart unless the computer was rebooted. My computer was using the sky2 driver with .22 and .23 kernel and the random stoppage continued.  I ran some Live CD's of other distro's with no problems but I didn't use them long enough for a thorough test. 

I solved the problem by digging out an old 3Com 3c-509 PCI card out of my parts box and installing it while disabling the on-board LAN.  I turned on the computer, Arch detected the new card and no more network problems.  Hopefully, the kernel devs will eventually fix the sky2 driver.

Dezza, I don't have a solution but at least you're not alone.  There are several posts on the forum regarding issues with the sky2 driver.

Oh my god .. That breaks my Linux heart .. Why do we have to live in workaround methods because hardware manufacturers are kissin' the feet of M$ as we speak ! sad ..

I get the same here, but I don't even get a connection to start with. I'm using a realtek card & have the Gigabyte motherboard chipset turned off in bios... I ran a pacman -Syu the other day and I don't think I booted back in until just now so it may be related to that...

I think it updated

lm_sensors

and a few others, which I would think are unrealted.

I'm having to type this from windows ATM but I can post the updated package names if it'll help. I'll also try rolling it back and see if that gives any idea of what went wrong.

Rolling them back made no difference.

May be a problem with dhcp, running ifconfig gives odd results which have nothing to do with my settings :

inet addr:169.254.30.180  Bcast:169.254.255.255  Mask:255.255.0.0

No idea where these came from :S Not sure if it's related to the OP's problem, but the result seems to be similar.

What does ifconfig give you after a /etc/rc.d/network restart dezza ?

Alex, are you sure that's not a problem with your configuration? If you don't have a connection to start with, then you probally didn't get an IP from the router. Do you know if your Windows system have special static IP settings or DHCP? And have you set it like that in ArchLinux?

My ifconfig, gives the same as before i lost the connection, as far as I remember.

I just noticed also, that on my Linux machine Firefox hangs in trying to establish connections far more than Windows does.. There's something which is preventing my network card from running in normal speeds or behavior.. I haven't experienced it being slow, and neither over LAN, it just stops working or I have to refresh a few times on a website before I get it on the hook.

As far as I know my config was fine, windows is on dhcp as well and got it's IP. I played around with it a bit and ended up giving up. On booting into it this evening, dhcp is working again, it's getting the IP and the connection is fine.

Not quite sure what to make of it, may be a router problem but it was a bit close to a package upgrade & I was getting the same error as you... Oh well, I'll have to have a play with my configs.

What the hell is 169.254.0.0? I've never seen this IP on my routing table before. Ever.

I get that message whenever I try to use the native iwl4965 driver for my notebook.  I switched to ndiswrapper+intel's windows driver and it worked fine.

As for the sporadic network loss: I was recently contacted by campus IT that a network device under my account was requesting bad IP's (0.0.0.0 was mentioned), and that's what kept booting me. 

I'll call them up to see if I can get a couple log entries from them then submit a bug report.

Well I don't know about you wireless guys .. And the people who always have problems with DHCP is probally not related here .. This is for randomly disconnects of wired LAN .. Especially people with sky2 module.
