OpenBox convert in need of some wireless tips & tricks

Just ditched the Gnome DE and installed OpenBox and so far loving it. A bit lost on how best to get the wireless up and running though. Was easy in gnome with NetworkManager.

Anyone got any experience with wireless in OpenBox? Is it best to install a panel for a tray icon or something like that? Googling for openbox+wireless didn't give much help.

Thanks. Will try it. Btw, is a panel necessary to make wicd work or to monitor networks? Haven't got a panel installed yet.

Re: OpenBox convert in need of some wireless tips & tricks

Just an FYI... many Openbox users still use the gnome-panel as their choice of displaying tray apps like NetworkManager.  Granted, NM is a bit steep on GNOME dependencies, but it's easy enough to run under Openbox as well.  I still say that NM is hands-down the most hassle-free 3rd party wireless management solution available--especially if you frequently hop networks.

If you are always connected to a single wifi access point, then I highly recommend the new Arch network-scripts that iphitus has been working on.

I have been using wicd for some time now. So far it has worked great under fluxbox.  It's kind like NM and will list available networks and you can select ones to auto connect to and so forth. I roam between 2 schools, my house and a local cafe. I haven't used it in openbox so not sure how it would work without a task manager/panel.

What are the benefits/drawbacks of the network scripts compared to one of the 3rd party wireless solutions like wicd or nm?
