Ease up turbo. Do you want it now or do you want it right?

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

Tardo (or whoever can help): I am away from my computer right now but when I return, I plan on trying out your 64-bit KDE. I formatted my computer yesterday so I'll be starting from scratch. I am wondering...when configuring the system, which daemons will I need to add to the list in /etc/rc.conf?

dbus?
hal?
alsa?
gdm?

That depends on what you need to run. I would suggest to always start dbus and hal for hardware hotplugging and possibly kdm to choose between kde(s) and other window managers. Of course, gdm is fine, too, but you would load a lot of stuff that isn't shared when using kde/qt programs. If you have more detailed questions about rc.conf I suggest you open a separate thread.

mutlu_inek: thank you for your response. I will start dbus and hal then. And I'll give KDM a shot although I saw tardo was having problems with it. With the new Phonon system on KDE, do I need to start ALSA to get sound or not?

Yes you will still need to start ALSA. Phonon is a frontend to xine, which requires ALSA.

I see that you have updated the i686 repo...now how about the 64bit one?? I've been very patient and waited...I would really like it because I hate not being able to use KDM..

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

Hi tardo,

Seems there is a dependancy conflict problem with the following packages : qca2-ossl & qca-tls.
Pacman wants to remove qca-tls in order to install qca2-ossl.

Got a bad feeling with that, so I did not perform any upgrade.

What should I do ?

Note : I don't have any svn package (telepathy, strigi, ...)

They updated extra. The qt package is now qt4, so lots of stuff changed. If you could update the deps that would be fantastic, thank you!

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

@carrouf: try removing qca-tls and installing qca2-ossl. You should have the same functionality, but since the libs major numbers are different, it's possible that whatever uses qca-tls might not work (iirc, kopete, which is also provided in kde4).

@brigadier: no need for dep changes. i already took that into account.

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

Ok so I wanted to test kde4 but there seem to be a conflict problem...

/usr/lib/strigi/strigita_ico.so exists in both 'strigi' and 'kdegraphics4'
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

Ok so i forced the kdegraphics4 to install. Another question. How do I get a power/battery status-icon in kde4's system tray? I have seen it in various screenshots but can't find out how to get it? Someone?

Ok now this is hell !!!
Kdm does not start at boot (must do it myself). And the most BAD thing : now I have Kde 3 & kde 4 at the same time !!!!

kde34.jpg

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP !!!!!!!!!!

(I think there something to deal with some conflicting dependencies ...)

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

Did you use your "regular" user account for KDE4?  The KDE4 devs warned to use a SEPARATE user account for KDE4, and not your "regular" user.

Again, KDE4 is for developers to start working with and for the curious.  Believe me, you can't really use it yet.

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

@mikber: I don't have that conflict. Not that it matters, that file should only be in kdegraphics4. Also, to put stuff in the panel, from the "Add Widgets" dialog, drag it directly to the panel. Don't add it to your desktop first then drag it, that does not work.

@carrouf: I just installed kdebase3 and I can run them side by side just fine. Try rebooting your computer? kdm4 also works fine for me, except that I don't use it. pastebin your /var/log/kdm.log, maybe the bug is there.

I'm uploading a quick fix for kdebase4/kdm. It'll be up shortly.

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

correct your $KDEDIR environment variable. If you're trying out KDE 4, but /etc/profile.d/kde.sh gets sourced, then you'll end up with a mix of KDE 3 + KDE 4 environment. The same thing goes for KDE 3 if your KDE 4 profile gets sourced.

better set the KDE 4 environment variables to something like:

export KDEDIR=/path/to/kde4prefix
export KDEDIRS=$KDEDIR
export KDEHOME=$HOME/.kde4
export KDEROOTHOME=/root/.kde4

in (something like) /etc/profile.d/kde4.sh

Then, make sure that:

chmod -x /etc/profile.d/kde4.sh

and

chmod +x /etc/profile.d/kde.sh

Then source the KDE 4 profile in KDE 4's startkde:

. /etc/profile.d/kde4.sh

Just make sure that when KDE 3 chosen, the KDE 4 profile isn't sourced and vice versa.

Can someone please update the 64 bit packages? At the moment I am using the other repo. But I'm having a few problems with it such as kdm not working.

Yes, but when kde4 is installed in /usr/bin you cannot do that, because you want /usr/bin in your path. So when you execute let's say kate, the system will find /usr/bin/kate and /opt/kde/bin/kate ....

Re: [REPO] kde4 4.0/amarok2/koffice2

Yes, but when kde4 is installed in /usr/bin you cannot do that, because you want /usr/bin in your path. So when you execute let's say kate, the system will find /usr/bin/kate and /opt/kde/bin/kate

Well, there are two ways to fix that:

1. Make a 'multi-slot' environment similar to Gentoo.  That is, make an /opt/kde3 and an /opt/kde4 and keep everything separate that way.  Also, make ~/.kde a link to either ~/.kde3 or ~/.kde4 depending on which version the user wants to run.
2. Make sure that /opt/kde/bin preceeds /usr/bin in the PATH.

Personally, I like the first option, and haven't figured out why none of the packages/packagers seem to be doing that.  If I ever get a bit of time, maybe I'll try doing something similar myself.
