ArchLinux & Intel Xeon

Hi there,

Today i was configuring a Server for the students of my Univercity. it is a simple Pemtium 3 Coppermine and works fine BUT in a few days more i'll recive a DELL PowerEdge 4600 with 2 Intel Xeon 2.4 Ghz so i need to setup SMP and i want to take advantage of all the instructions of this processor.

My question is:

Can i recompile all the system to be more powerful than just i686?, i think i need to change my CFLAGS at the makepkg.conf to use something like   -march=intel-xeon big_smile I really don't know, I need some advice with this.

I do know how to setup SMP and use IRQ Affinity with the kernel but i want to recompile everything to make this server as fastes as possible.

Any help will be a great.

Thank you very much.

Re: ArchLinux & Intel Xeon

Take care if you have gigabit ehternet cards. Those Tigon3 cards have bugs and you need at least kernel 2.4.21-rc1 to get a stable system.

Re: ArchLinux & Intel Xeon

uhmm i looked at dell.com and seems that this model doesn't comes with that NIC.

this is the communication section:

Embedded Broadcom Gigabit NIC and Intel 10/100 NIC to preserve valuable PCI slots. Embedded NICs support PXE and teaming functions like fail over and load balancing.
    Intel PRO/100+ Dual-Port Server Adapter
Intel PRO/100S Server Adapter (with IP SEC Encryption)
    Broadcom®  NetXtreme 10/100/1000 (Cat-5 Copper Cabling)
    Intel PRO/1000 XT
    Intel PRO/1000 F
    56K2 modem (internal or external)

Broadcom == Tigon3?
