I love Gentoo. That being said, i get tired of all the compiling. Started using arch a couple of weeks ago and have really enjoyed it. I'll believe i'll stay for a while. ![]()

Also tired of compiling in Gentoo :-(
Switching to Arch and things really makes me happy :-)
However, I am still trying to find a fast and up-to-date mirror.

There is the
sortmirrors.pl
script installed by default, and also a few other ones posted here on the forums if you're having trouble finding a reliable mirror to connect up with.

Thanks, I did some search and found http://people.os-zen.net.
I have a download speed at about 200k/s and there are plenty of packages, I am really happy to find this mirror. :-) Greate thanks to those people!
This makes it much faster for me to switch to Arch. I am loving Arch even more and I am going to tell my friends things about Arch.

Is there this kind of distro which i try to describe?
1. distro = half_partition-a + half_partition-b
1-1. a is for real use, b is for some kind of compile farm[active-on: active-off]
2. when active-state is on, partition b works like compile farm, always compile some packages in chrooted environment.
3. more detaily, b is automatically works like alfs, it will try latest packages when it available.
4. once b done compiling whole packages tree in stable-state, notify it to user, try to upgrade whole distro(partition b) into partition a.
5. when active-state is off, b is not in work, a try to "sudo pacman -Suy y" automatically, but If installed packages in a is higher than pacman server storage, it stop.
I removed my sig, cause i select the flag, the flag often the target of enemy.

I used Gentoo for about a week. Didn't like it from the technical side. Another thing I didn't like was this sort of arrogance it had, calling itself a metadistribution and all that.
Anyway, the way I see it, Gentoo is Gentoo, Arch is Arch. Arch is not a simpler Gentoo, maybe it's simpler *than* Gentoo. Arch is mature enough to stand on its own without being constantly compared to others, because it is like no other.
If you insist on comparing I'd say Arch is a simpler Slackware with more advanced package management. But still, Arch is Arch.
sweiss told it,
Gentoo is Gentoo and Arch is Arch. You can compare it and again not.
All voices here told it, you spent more time to build up a Gentoo system. And you have nearly the same benefit, that you have a fast system on both sides, with Arch in less time. But Gentoo runs on more cpu architectures, and this a great benefit.

Arch has also been described as meta-distribution...

I run Gentoo and Arch on my Laptop
and almost all my (little) linux know-how I learned by installing, configuring and keeping these two Distros up to date...
Both have things I like and also things I don't like.
At the moment I prefer Arch ![]()

I thought I'd join the chorus! I just got my gui up and running last night. I used to run Gentoo back in he rc1.0 - 2004.0. Then with school and subsequently work thereafter, I got too busy to maintain it. I fidled with the usual distros (even *gasp* went back to window$ for a while), finaly settled on Ubuntu. I recently got tired of all the bloat and tried Gentoo again. I have to say that Gentoo seems to have gotten too big for the developers to maintain properly. I couldn't even get a working desktop running without getting a new compile error every time I tried. I still don't have the time for that much upkeep. I love a lot of things about Gentoo, but Arch seems to offers almost as much customisability, and a very comparable speed. And all it took was 2 days, and here I am!
And God bless Kdemod! This thing rocks!

Welcome to Arch!
You will find this is a great community. No distro bashing, just good people helping other good people and civil discussion.

I only just noticed the date of the post right before mine. Heh... Oops. ![]()

I'm enjoying it so far! For me, the community can often be the make-it-or-break factor when choosing a distro. That was actually the thing I liked most about Ubuntu. But so far the community seems great here too.
