NetworkManager sets rt2500 bitrate to 1M [solved]

EDIT it is a bug in the current rt2500 driver, apparently will be fixed in 2.6.25.
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB2/v … php?t=4579

I have a rt2500 wifi card and I use network manager from gnome and the rt2500pci.ko driver. It works very well but every time I restart the computer the speed of the card is set to 1Mbit, if I manually set it to 54M using

sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M

it works at 54M for the rest of the session.
I could not find a way to configure the bitrate used by networkmanager.
