Firefox 3.0b4-1 does not load

Hello

I've just upgraded to firefox 3.0b4-1 but I'm unable to launch it. It just not appears, no window appears. Launching from the console print nothing, even using the safe-mode. The program doesn't close it self, it just seems to do nothing, but a Ctrl+C can kill it.

Upgrading firefox3 has also broken my firefox2 installation, and I had to reinstall firefox2, launch -safe-mode and uncheck the "Work Offline" option to make it useable (uncheking it in the normal mode did nothing). Now I can use firefox2 agin without problem.

Rebooting didn't solve anything. Is there a way (or option) more readable than gdb to have more explainations of what Ff does ?

Another thing (don't know if it's important) : upgrading firefox3 required to upgrade libpng.

Re: Firefox 3.0b4-1 does not load

I have the same problem,

it does run as root though. But no chowning or chmodding or extension or profile removal seem to make it work as user.

Same problem with firefox3-bin and firefox3 from unstable.

running kde4.

It works from unstable but it doesn't seem to like to shut down, which I know how to deal with but needs looking into

@ Cilyan and Mikko777

Have you tried purging your system completely of anything that remotely links to firefox?

pacman -Rsn firefox firefox3
updatedb
locate firefox
locate mozilla

rm anything that you find with those last 2 commands, including the ~/.mozilla folder (backup bookmarks etc.)

Then try installing firefox3 again from unstable and see if it works.

Re: Firefox 3.0b4-1 does not load

I had firefox 2 installed when I first installed firefox beta 3 from unstable, only one thing went strange and that was the Back and Forward buttons that disappeared. Otherwise it has been working without any hitch. I upgraded to beta 4 from unstable when the new libpng entered the repos and it's working just as nice as beta 3 for me.

I do not have any problem with starting or shutting down firefox either.

Re: Firefox 3.0b4-1 does not load

Ok now im pissed off enough to give up. Just one of these arch problems*1 I have no idea how to troubleshoot.

Downgraded to beta3.

-beta4 only works as root.
-tried many de's wm's
-installed and reinstalled
-tried several ff3 packages
-removed .mozilla
-as far as i can see removed all plugins and extensions

still it only worked as root.
My guess is that its a permission problem, since something has apparently messed up my folders judging from the filepermission complaints given by pacman.

And ff3b4 works on laptop, go figure ^^

*1 arch problem, something stops working without any apparent reason, only affects a minority of ppl at once, usually remains unsolved until it automagically fixes itself with new packages or upgrades.

Try /opt/mozilla/lib/firefox 3.***/firefox in a terminal and see if it opens. If it does then adjust path accordingly in your launcher

Re: Firefox 3.0b4-1 does not load

@Cilyan: could  you check if your LD_PRELOAD environment variable contains libaoss.so? If yes, remove it and try to start some recent build of Ff3; this workaround works for me. BTW, I have submitted the problem to Firefox Bugzilla some time ago, if you'd have any interesting comments...

Thanks briest, removing LD_PRELOAD works!

Re: Firefox 3.0b4-1 does not load

You can always leave system-wide setting as is and run firefox via wrapper script instead. But I don't think there are many OSS-using apps on my system...
