yes, connecting to an open network is easy, I can even do it with the buggy GUI tools.  I was wondering though if there was a way to automatically connect to an any open network with one profile.  It seems it should be trivial to detect the ESSID of an open network and put it in automatically.

Yes, it'd be trivial, you could easily write a script to do it.
