As pointed out earlier, the search line tells your resolver of the default domain name to search. So say for example you have an internal dns running with all your computers under the domain 'linux.net'. If you were to ping one of your machines as 'bill' instead of 'bill.linux.net', normally the resolver would have no idea what you are talking about return a message as such. When you put the 'search' line in resolv.conf, it tacks on the domain so it can be retried by the resolver and thus found on your network. This can also be accomplished through a properly set domain name on the local machine itself through the hostname calls in your init scripts and in /etc/hosts. Your hostname should be a fully qualified hostname ie 'bill.linux.net' and your hosts file should resemble that same format as well but must be the first alias call. ie:

127.0.0.1 bill.linux.net bill localhost.localdomain localhost

Running 'dnsdomainname' will show you your current domain.
