Dropped wireless with hidden ssid using gnome network manager

I have a linksys wrt54gl router and a laptop I am trying to connect to it with gnome network manager and WPA.  Everything works fine if I broadcast ssid.  However, if I disable ssid broadcasting I have difficulty connecting using the gnome network manager or iwconfig.

Some of the problems:
-Upon gnome login, the gnome network manager doesn't try to restablish the connection
-I have to click on "Connect to other wireless network" and retype all my info.  This works 50% of the time.
-A few hours after I connect (usually when I'm not there) the connection gets dropped.
-The other 50%, I keep trying to connect till the nm-applet disappears (presumably crashes)
-After the nm-applet disappears or while I can't connect, setting up the connection with iwconfig doesn't work.  The essid field remains empty (even though the encryption key is there).

Thanks for any help.

Re: Dropped wireless with hidden ssid using gnome network manager

It's an inherent issue with networkmanager, use something else.

Or just leave your essid on broadcast. There's no security in hiding it.

Thanks for the reply.  I was not aware of this problem before installing it.  Seems like an odd bug for a program that works so well otherwise.
