What's going on with the AUR?

Over the last few days I've been noticing that when I search for a packages (such as cairo-ubuntu) in the AUR I get no results. However yaourt seems to find them all fine.

Is the AUR team aware of this issue?
Thanks in advance

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

Yaourt is incorrectly returning deleted AUR packages. This is not an AUR issue.

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

i had gotten results some days ago about this package too. in fact it was also in the latest uploaded packages list along with freetype-ubuntu IIRC. So im not so sure its only a yaourt issue.

Hm... I try doing a search with 'ubuntu' keyword, and all *-ubuntu packages seem to be gone from AUR. Did someone removed them all from AUR?

Does anyone remember who the maintainer of the *-ubuntu packages was?

From the cairo-ubuntu 1.6.4 PKGBUILD:
Contributor: Paul Bredbury <brebs@sent.com>
He's the contributor for libxft-ubuntu and freetype2-ubuntu aswell.

IIRC he orphaned them and someone else adopted them.

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

It looks like he has orphaned all his packages.  If they were orphaned, anybody can then adopt them and delete them...  Probably something that should be stopped.

Edit: I think dolby quoted the wrong me....  lol

what i mean is that the maintainer was not brebs at the time they got deleted.

This sounds really bad (why would someone do anything like that?). I hope we can find a solution to this problem. sad

OTOH, didn't we have some sort of a log file to see who's adopting/deleting packages?

I won't go into why someone might be doing that. Anyway, the AUR never really deletes a package: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/cairo-ubuntu/

I don't know of one.  Does not mean there isn't one though.

A minor nitpick here, for accuracy's sake: the AUR does delete the package. However, the files remain on the webserver, and are still accessible via direct URL, as above. Any user who does this, either manually or via an application such as yaourt, should be aware that they are accessing packages that were deleted from the AUR, probably for a good reason.

This is general advice, as I'm not aware of the specifics regarding these *-ubuntu packages.

Actually, most of brebs' (Paul Bredbury) packages were deleted (not only *-ubuntu, but also for instance paintown). I know he got pissed here on the forums. He probably left arch, and (as far as I know) orphaned his AUR packages. Now someone (might be him, but I doubt it) is adopting and deleting his packages. I saw someone upload *-ubuntu packages up to AUR a few days ago, but the person didn't want to maintain them, so he/she orphaned them again. Now they were deleted again. Do the math.

edit well any of us that are using these want to adopt them or allan take them to community?

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

I'm the one who re-uploaded cairo-ubuntu along with freetype2-ubuntu (or fontconfig-ubuntu, can't remember which one it was) two days ago. As I don't have any clue on how they work, I just wanted to make them avaliable for adoption again. I managed to upload these two packages, AUR popped me en error message for the two others, saying I did not have permission to do so.

As you say, bender02, less than 24 hours after I uploaded the packages again and orphaned them, there were adopted and deleted. I'm sure somebody is just doing this on purpose, maybe for the fun of pissing off people or something ; I've seen similar things happen to lib32-* packages (such as lib32-dbus, orphaned than adopted and deleted, which broke bin32-skype...) .

As a temporary solution, I've uploaded the four *-ubuntu packages on the [archlinuxfr] repo for both i686 and x86_64. The PKGBUILDS are also safely avaliable there. But as I said, it's just a temporay solution as I have absolutely no idea on how to update them big_smile

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

I pretty sure I maintain lib32-dub is in [community]...

It is begining to sound to me like someone is deliberately deleting packages from the AUR.  I had this happen with a couple of packages I orphaned to free up time for other Arch related stuff.

I think we are getting to the point where all deletions have to be approved by a TU.  It seems that as the community is getting bigger, expecting everyone to play nice is just becoming naive...  I will file a bug report.

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

that sounds like a good cure.  this makes me wonder how often packages are removed legitimately and how much of a burden this is going to put on the TUs.

archlinux - please read this and this — twice — then ask questions.

Re: What's going on with the AUR?

Yes, it's in [community] now, but has been broken for some time. You can find a trace of it there : http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=7914

that sounds like a good cure.  this makes me wonder how often packages are removed legitimately and how much of a burden this is going to put on the TUs.

My 2 cents : perhaps letting the original submitter only (not the new maintener) the right to delete his own packages would be a good way to reduce the TU's amount of work while still ensuring nobody can delete a package for the sole pleasure of annoying users.

I orphaned the packages, that's all. I deleted nothing. Just to clarify.

It'll be some kiddie, who's deleting stuff because he can.

Some of my packages are on an old server, but I'll populate a new server. Probably.

I now use Fedora wink

Now, it seems to be happening with some kdemod packages eg. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=17228
