based upon my experience using an extremely obsolete ftp client on beos, and then trying the new ones with linux, they don't even offer basic features. the ftp client must:
auto-completion of directories
auto-login with .netrc
compatible with macdef macros in .netrc
and, it would be nice for it to have FXP capabilities, and directory downloads, and real-time download/upload speed progress display.
since you just can't put these types of questions into a search engine, i'm reaching out to the expert community. thank you. yes and im talking about a terminal-based client not gui

I'm not so sure about all the features you're looking for, but ncftp has at least 1 and 2, perhaps even 4.

As the wise man said: all ftp client sucks, lftp just sucks less. Not sure if it fit all your needs though because I don't know whe .netrc does.

I personally like yafc, but I don't know if it will do what you need.

I've used lftp and ncftp, although both have unique features they cannot read a simple macdef script, which is what i need. i also looked at yafc, looks interesting but does not look like it works with macdef, and only autologin.
Yafc also looks for ~/.netrc, and reads autologin information from that file.
i'm still taking suggestions ! still looking for a client that can work with macdef besides the plain gnu ftp that sucks. help !

unless you have like some dozens of macdef scripts, rewrite them as lftp scripts
