Ever since the last kernel update, I am unable to adjust the framebuffer. I had it set to 1024x768 in the menu.lst file but ever since the update it can only use the default resolution. I've tried both 1024x768 and 1280x1024 resolutions with no luck. At boot up I receive the error message "Undefined video mode number: <number of resolution>. Is there a configuration needed in the mkinitcpio.conf file or is there another way to resolve this?
Graphics card: nVidia GeForce 7900 GT
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I am also having this problem, since I updated packages this morning. I have tried changing the resolutions in the menu.lst file, which didn't work. To kill the error message, I removed the vga= entry from the menu.lst file, which results in a much uglier boot sequence, but at the same time, stops you needing to push space to boot. Not an ideal solution - I know. I am also running splashy from AUR, which refuses to run.
I have also noticed, since upgrading, that my filesystem checks at boot are much slower too.
Perhaps I will try compiling a kernel to see if I can fix the problem, if nobody can find a solution. Perhaps this is a bug?

Same problem here, 7900gt...

I am seeing this also. I'm going to try an earlier kernel version...if I can figure out how to do that.

I got an earlier kernel from the aur, and removed the newer one. Remember to recompile ati or nvidia graphics drivers - I didn't, resulting in confusing errors when trying to run compiz-fusion.

same here !
is there any other easier solution than jimmy512 recomended or i have to wait for a newer kernel version that'll fix this problem ?

I have just set my vga=normal until I do a little more research, so I can at least cut down my boot up time.
Speaking of compiz fusion has anyone experienced an issue similar to the thread:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=48729
If so, please let me know if there is a resolution for this. Thanks.

Just letting everyone know that I have the same issue.

i have this issue, but with me it appears to be somewhat random: i turn on the pc it boots ok with vga=792, it starts booting... i reboot, and sometimes it runs the way described above, and with some luck if i reboot some other time it starts ok.
*kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-label/archroot ro vga=792
*nvidia 6600
*latest -Syu (stable system)
installed the splashy thing to see how it would turn out, but reverted, so no problem there ( corrected the initrd file and the standart init package )
that's all i remenber now...

No problems here with vesafb.

Add edd=off to the kernel command line , see
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10498
but that's not happens to everyone , I think maybe BIOS related, not sure...

I added edd=off to the kernel line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and that did the trick thanks.

Adding edd=off doesn't help me any further...

I reinstalled the kernel, which seemed to work for me (though I managed to thoroughly trash my system in doing so :-) ). I am now running the base 2.6.25 kernel with no problem.

the 'edd=off' thing keeps the same appearing:
Undefined video mode: 318
...

For those that didn't have success by adding edd=off to the kernel line in the menu.lst, make sure you don't have "edd" listed in your modules line of your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file. If you do, just simply delete the text, saved the file then type the command 'mkinitcpio -g kernel26.img (your kernel version may differ refer to http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio if you are unsure what to do here).

For those that use lilo the line should be append="edd=off" .

Still not working here, I get the same error message.
I added edd=off to the kernel line in grub, checked etc/mkinitcpio.conf and it didn't contain any references of "edd".

Willie, try to use mode number 773 (1024x768) just to see if that works. I noticed that some modes will not work for me and I receive the same error message. 773 works fine on my end.

I managed to get a similar error to this, I resolved it by removing my USB flash drive before rebooting.

I know what my problem is now.
When I have both my projector and lcd plugged in, I get this error. Unplugging the projector, and all is good. (it's a 720p Epson, so I guess it's reporting that it supports 1280x720)

edd=off helped me a lot too. using geforce 6200.
