[wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

Strange problem. I can't go on the internet since I made a pacman -Su. There's a problem with ppp or something in the arch configuration (modules??).
I have a serial external hardware modem that had always worked easily, BUT now wvdial cannot connect. The problem does not come from wvdial, I'm pretty sure of that.

[root@myhost fred]# wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT5145992743
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT5145992743
ERROR
--> Invalid dial command.
--> Disconnecting at Sun Jun  1 15:44:18 2008

The only error I had doing the update was when compiling the new kernel26 (standard from arch). I had to remove "kermaps" in my mkinitcpio.conf because the hook keymaps was not found. After removing that, while keeping the old settings (my old mkinitcpio was not replaced during process, it made a .pacnew), everything went well.

Except now wvdial doesn't work. I have the same rc.conf than before, the same mkinitcpio was used and it keeped the same ppp settings or the wvdial.conf. Everything I could look at is like before except it's more up to date and my kernel is also newer, I have the last one, kernel26 package.

I tried all that :

-Reinstalling wvdial, wvstreams and ppp and deleting all config files in /etc/ppp, reinstalling them or replacing them with working ubuntu config files
-Deleting and rebuilding /etc/wvdial.conf, adding stupid mode on... but this file was not modified in process and it had always worked for me anyway...
-Tried to add in wvdial.conf DIAL COMMAND = ATDP (for pulse dialing) but it changed nothing
-tried rebulding the kernel with more options like (can't remember the exact name) adding the ppp module in mkinitcpio

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

maybe a problem about PATHS??? Where is this command located ??? ATDT is a dial command so, I guess it has something to do with PPP?

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

Try

echo ATDT0001112222 > /dev/[your modem here]

And see if it dials for you. It's the duty of the modem to do just about everything...if it dials with that then we know it's a wvdial and not a modem problem. Or does it dial, and it just isn't completing the transaction?

In wvdial it doesn't dial at all. I'll try your method.

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

echo ATDT0001112222 > /dev/ttyS0 returned absolutely nothing.

I did for fun "find -name ATDT" and at the end of the search I got an error. I'll try to traduce it from french and resume it by memory:

hard link error in /proc/1 - there may be an error about the file system driver blabla - using automatically the no?flaws?(can't remember) option... some results in previous searches could have failed (to show up)

Since this repertory is really important and contains drivers (including modems), what do you recommend when there's a hardlink error? I did ls -l but /proc/1 is a repertory with no link (I don't see that)

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

So it didn't start dialing when you did that echo command? Are you absolutely certain the device node didn't change in the kernel upgrade? That seems most likely to me...though the fact that ATZ returns positive is puzzling. Either the device node is wrong or the hardware failed. There is very little abstraction with a hardware modem. You send it a command in plain text, and it follows it.

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

well this exact modem works on ubuntu, windows...

Looks like the ATDT command is just not found. The echo command normally would not have showed any error even if there was one, since the output was sent to the device.

How could I rebuild all the files in /proc repertory? by reinstalling the kernel? Should I run hwdetect before like what was done by the original installer coming with the cd of arch?

For the purpose I started from the 2007.5 edition and updated gradually, by installing fresh stuff then I made the famous pacman -Syu.

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

Sorry I forgot to get back to you...so you've tried both straight pppd and KPPP? Gnome-PPP is simply a wvdial frontend, so it's no use for you.

What's very odd is that ATZ is returning okay, and ATDT is failing. Honestly, there is no 'command' that ATDT links to. The command is literally the ASCII characters - they tell the modem to dial the following number. To be perfectly frank, I don't know what's going wrong for you...sorry I couldn't be more help.

Re: [wvdial, ppp] ATDT invalid dial command

it broke the system again... I don't know which library is missing.
I'll try reinstalling every "*lib*.pkg" located in my /var/cache/pacman...
really strange problem
