Macbook Pro wifi Help...

Hi,

Brand new to these forums and to archlinux and i am amazed so far, imo it is the best distro i have ever used period. Now down to business smile i have a macbook pro and i have installed archlinux alongside mac os x. I am using the x64 version overlord with the latest kernel 2.6.25, i have installed gnome desktop and many other things i can connect via eth0 which is my wired connection via dhcpcd. However even after installing madiwfi and reading the wiki i am still lost.

My wifi is WPA2 encryption ubuntu picked it up using madwifi no problem but i seems to be struggling with this on arch. I have issued the command "iwconfig ath0 up" and it shows up as a device under ifconfig but i can't get it to connect.

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with this smile

Thanks

If you need anymore information i would be happy to post it.

I am unfamiliar with your macbook's hardware, can you post the output of the following command?

Re: Macbook Pro wifi Help...

braz2kuk:

can you issue the command

iwlist scan

You may need to run the command as root

If you see a list of access points, you have installed your madwifi drivers correctly!

To finish bringing your wireless interface up, you should follow the quickstart guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wir … Quickstart

If you do not see a list of access points, you will need to go a look up the madwifi install guide in the archwiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wir … up#madwifi and try again. (or move to an area that you know has access poinits)

If you have a window manager installed there are two main choices for network management: netcfg and wicd. (wicd and netcfg will allow you to setup your wireless and wired networks in a GUI) I prefer wicd, but I know there is a rabid fanbase here for netcfg.

And of course (if you haven't already guessed) here are the archwiki links you will need to install netcfg or wicd:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wicd
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Netcfg

Welcome to Arch!

Re: Macbook Pro wifi Help...

hi,

just want to make a comment and possible recommendation.
sounds like you're dual booting arch and OS X.  you might give virtual machines a try instead.  I used to dual boot, but after using virtual machines, I wouldn't even think about it anymore.

i would suggest looking at Virtualbox (completely free) first and then VMware fusion second (not free).
virtual machines are nice for a number of reasons: you don't have to reboot, you cam run multiple operating systems
easily, and the networking (especially wifi) just works because it's all funneled through your host operating system.
