connection to wlan takes very long

When i first start up my laptop and i try to connect to a wireless network, netcfg2 gives me a wireless association failed. When I try to do it manually using iwconfig and dhcpcd, dhcpcd wlan0 gives me err, wlan0 timed out. After about 5 minutes when i try netcfg2 again it'll give me a DHCP IP lease attempt failed, dhcpcd still gives me the same wlan0 timed out. After about 10 minutes out of no where dhcpcd will connect. Anyone have any idea? I've tried reseting the interface down and up. I am at a lost. It connects eventually, it is just extremely annoying to have to wait 15 minutes. Thanks for any help.

Are you connecting wirelessly to a switch or router?  Almost certainly this is the problem -- such as you're antenna in the wrong place, or near electrical interference,  You might also want to check via iwconfig that you have the correct "channel" setting -- and perhaps try changing it from the default (often 11).  If via "iwlist scanning" you find several other Wireless connections, that can often have an effect.

Thanks for the reply, and its a router i'm connecting to. I've changed it to the right channel and i've tried moving the router around and even changing the essid. It seems to me like the wireless card doesnt boot up or isnt ready for a while? i dunno

Try setting your access point in your /etc/network.d/yournetworkname with

AP="xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx"

Also, did you append net-profiles to your daemons in rc.conf?
And do you have a..

NETWORKS=(yournetworkname)

entry in your rc.conf?

I seem to be in a similar boat to ijiti, but I usually only need 5 minutes before calling netcfg2 will connect. I'm on a college campus, so there are several wireless connections seemingly available, it's just that all but one is very weak (<5/70 on strength). So I tried kevin89's idea of denoting the access point in the profile, but to no avail. I'm using an atheros based wireless card, and I have the right entries in rc.conf. Let me know if you need any other information to help solve the problem!

I've got the same problem, my wlan card is an IPW4965. Does anyone know a solution?

kevin: The ap= thing won't work, there's no support in the code for it.

This is a driver bug you've got, file bugs and try more recent versions.
