[SOLVED] Minefield instead of FireFox

Hi all,

I'm just wondering why I get Minefield instead of Firefox when I do this:

bash-3.2# pacman -S firefox
resolving dependencies...

And I'm wondering, is there a KISS way to get and install aMSN and Shaman, without going through hours of getting some wrapper of pacman to work?

But the good news is: Arch is for so far the only (latest) Linux that doesn't freeze on my hardware! I've tried the latest of Xubuntu, FC9, Zen, openSUSE and a few more. All freezed on my ADM8511 USB ( yes, the (in)famous pegasus 2 module ) sooner or later.

So I'm happy already with Arch anyway.

aMSN is in community so just "pacman -S amsn"

For shaman, there is no official binary at the moment but you can get the PKGBUILD from the AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=15422) and use makepkg to build it. Check the wiki for more info.

The KISSest way for installing from AUR is to download the PKGBUILD and run makepkg followed by a pacman -U packagename.

I'm just too lazy so I use yauort

The only thing that happens is some sites will give you an annoying message that your browser is not recognized but they generally let you continue as is. If this bothers you you can just change the general.useragent in about:config

Yup, you can also install the user agent switcher plugin that's available and can imitate IE7 or any other supported browser on the fly.

Hi again

I thank you'll for the very useful advices, i've putted them in practice and it works great!
(I don't like the mousecursor in Mindfield but that's a matter of taste and of no importance at all)

I'm using Xfce4, very fast and simple (no overhead and/or overkill for what i do with it).

Here some specs of my 'old' trusty sys:

Intel 2.26GHz
1GB DDR
Gfx nVidia V6200
5x HDD in the range 200-300GB each
Samsung SyncMaster 930BF
LiteOn and NEC DVD/CD reader/writers

The HDD's brings me to another newbie question, in the past (before ArchLinux) i've used to have power managment to put the 4 SATA HDD's (S.M.A.R.T supported) to sleep after 10 or 15 minutes inactivity or so. Is there something similar for ArchLinux? A GUI for Xfce4 for that kind of power management would be cool but is not nescessary.

I thank you'll in advance for any suggestions and advices.

PS: Please forgive me if i should make another thread or post about this, should I?

You should make a new post because people think this thread is about firefox/minefield not power management.

Sort of on topic, but I'm kinda surprised it is still called Minefield, I thought that was the name that they were going to always use for in development versions, kinda like SID is for Debian. It would make sense, calling a finshed build Minefield doesn't seem right.
