I'm having problems setting up my new HP all-in-one printer-scanner-copier; a HP Photosmart C4280.
It works fine as a printer, but it I cannot get sane to scan using it. Output from the command sane-find-scanner gives
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x5c11 [Photosmart C4200 series]) at libusb:006:015
which looks promising, but then scaneimage -L says that there are no imaging devices.
From dmesg:
usb 6-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 15
usb 6-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 15 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x5C11
scsi16 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 15
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi 16:0:0:0: Direct-Access HP Photosmart C4280 1.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
sd 16:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 16:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg4 type 0
usb-storage: device scan complete
If anyone else has solved a similar problem, help would be appreciated

I had this same problem, and what you have to do is add your user to the scanner group (as root, of course):
gpasswd -a youruser scanner
And then logout/login to your user.
My Rigs:

Have you tried this, from the post install message?
# If you want to use this driver with sane:
# echo "hpaio" >> /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
