Every time I reboot, I find that I have to unmute my alsamixer settings.
Any idea why?
Do I have to set them as root for them to stick?

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

After you play with the mixer settings, I believe it stores the settings in some configuration file somewhere, so at a later date you can tell it to restore these same settings.
I just added the following command to my 'rc.local' file to do it at startup:
/etc/rc.local
alsactl restore

Did you set the levels with alsamixer, run 'alsactl store' as root and add the alsa daemon to the DAEMONS= array in /etc/rc.conf ?

I already have it in my daemons array. I guess I will try using the store command and if that doesnt work, I will try what Wittfella suggested and add it to rc.local

Are you using pulseaudio?

Running alsactl store as root worked. But I don't remember doing it in my other Arch install. Hmm...
